Green Bay -- It appears the Green Bay Packers and one other NFL team had agreed on a third-round pick as compensation for Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez, but according to Gonzalez, Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson pulled out at the last second.
According to an NFL source, the Packers were the team Gonzalez was focusing on and preferred them over the other contender. He had approved a trade to Green Bay. It was up to the Chiefs, however, to determine where he would be traded.
Gonzalez told FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer that he was furious a deal didn't go down.
"Last night I talked to Carl and I point-blank asked him what it would take to get it done," Gonzalez said in an exclusive interview. "I wanted to know if it could happen with a fourth (-round pick). He started talking about a second and a fifth like the (Jeremy) Shockey deal. Nobody is going to trade a second for a 32-year-old tight end. All along Carl said he would do something that works for both parties. Then he talked about how he traded a third for Willie Roaf, and he made it pretty clear to me that's what was going to get it done. That was certainly fair.
"I know teams offered a third and in the end, Carl made the asking price a second. I'm very disappointed that he didn't go through with it after he told me he was going to try to make it happen. I've been around this league a long time, it's a business. There's nothing I can do about it. I was (ticked) off about it, but I'll get over it. I won't let it affect my play and my preparation."
During his Wednesday news conference, coach Mike McCarthy declined to say whether the Packers were close to a deal with the Chiefs, but two NFL sources said they were. One said that the Packers thought they had an agreement on a deal for a third-round pick, but were told late in the day that the price had gone up.
General manager Ted Thompson had the option of meeting the new price, but decided it was too much and let the trading deadline pass without a deal.
The trade didn't appear all that different than the one former Packers general manager Ron Wolf swung when he sent a second-round pick to Miami for tight end Keith Jackson and the fourth-round pick the Packers had sent the Dolphins for receiver Mark Ingram. Wolf made the trade with no conditions despite the fact Jackson had no intention of reporting to the Packers. Getting the fourth-round pick back lessened the value of the second-round compensation.
Jackson was 29 at the time of the trade, which occurred on March 30, 1995.

Wow, I'm shocked TT was going to even give up a third. Not that Gonzo isn't worth it, but TT is such a draft monger. Needless to say, Tony Gonzalez would have added another dimension to our offense. Maybe they can work something out in the off-season.

Re: Gonzalez says Chiefs pulled back on deal
This was just talked about on Heller and Murphy on 1070 that the Chief's wanted a 3rd and we offered a 3rd but when it came down to it the Chief's said they wanted a 2nd insted. They weren't even buyers at their own number.
I don't put this on Thompson at all. He streched a little but didn't over do it to try to make up for Moss last year and put us in a bad spot.

wow i'm shocked. TT offered a third? I'm totally shocked. tha t mus t have bee n very hard for Tt to even think about giving away a draft choice higher than a 7th for anybody.
TT, i'll give you props for trying.
it would appear both buffalo and Atlanta offered a second round choice and KC wanted green bay to do likewise. and then a pissed Gonzo nixed the deals to atl and buffalo. and to save face, KC didn't want to go back to green bay and accept their third round pick offer. it would have bee n bad press in KC if they had accepted green bay's third round offer if they had received a second round offer from a different team. it would also be bad press in KC to accept a third round pick when Dallas gave up a first round and change to detroit for Roy williams. it's still hard to believe Moss was traded for a 4th round pick. oakland must have really wanted to unload him. Al Davis must be really mad at the guy who told him Moss was washed up.
again, I'll give props to TT on this day for at least trying to obtain Gonzo.
i bet TT doesn't play much high stakes poker. i can see him folding on every hand. that's too rich for me.

Just curious, why are some a little surprised TT offered a moderately high draft pick for TG ?

TT doesn't have much of a history trading draft picks unless he's trading for more draft picks. There are a few exceptions, but I don't think he's ever offered a pick as high as a third for a player. (As far as the media knows at least).

Supposedly Ted wanted draft picks back if TG didn't play out the rest of the contract.

Re: Gonzalez says Chiefs pulled back on deal
i was suprised Tt offered a 3rd round pick beause he wouldn't even offer a 4th round pick for Moss. Tt offered the raiders a 5th round pick and then went to bed. he was shocked the next day to find out the patriots acquired him for their 4th round pick. What did Tt give up to acquire Grant?
Tt's history of unwillingness to give up high draft picks for real players is well noted. on the other hand, he'll trade a first round pick for a second round pick to save money. Tt has no problem trading picks for picks. Some might sa y Tt is kind of picky.

That wasn't it and I don't know where you got that, as Gonzalez had promised he would play out the remainder of his contract unless there was a significant injury. The Chiefs got greedy and changed their mind and wanted a 2nd or a 3rd and 4th. it had nothing to do with TT wanting draft picks back as that was never even discussed.

Re: Gonzalez says Chiefs pulled back on deal
the problem was KC received two offers that included second round picks and TT was not willing to give up a second round pick. if only Tt had said, i second that...
I'm quite sure Atl and buffalo also thought they had a done deal , until Gonzo pissed on their offers. which pissed off the kC gm, who in turn pissed on Gonzo's dreams of leaving KC.
Essentually, it got into a pissing contest leaving everyone pissed off.
