Gary Ellis: "New D coordinator will probably be Mike Nolan"

I don't have a link, but on ESPN radio they had former Packer packer RB Gary Ellis on. He said that it is widely known in the media that Bob Sanders isn't MM's type of D coordinator, and then he mentioned that he thinks Mike Nolan will be the replacement.

I'd be all over this hire. He's done well with both a 3-4 and a 4-3/3-4 hybrid D. Great intensity.

Merry F'ing X-mas to all if this happens. Nolan, 3-4, sign Ray Lewis to be the leader.....overpay him, I don't care. I am not sure Baltimores situation but I know at the very least Lewis and Suggs are free agents.

Or draft the new Rey Rey.

If they switched to a 3-4, I'd be all over Maualuga.

I like the idea of a three four, but it's likely that the defense would be worse next season than it would be had we just stuck with a 4-3 and got healthy.

MiG is right about the need for pass rushing OLBs. We would almost have to take either Everette Brown or Brian Orakpo (whichever one is there). But that means we still need another OLB on the opposite side and a massive wall on the inside at DT.

It's a good idea for the future because it's easier finding pass rushers, but I wouldn't expect a ton in year one.

We'd still need another DT who has any ability to pressure the passer and another DE if we stayed a 4-3 defense, not an easy task, especially finding that DT. I don't think just getting healthy would be enough to significantly improve the current defense so i'm all for a switch.

The best DT in the draft is Gerald McCoy. He's only a redshirt sophomore and he might not even come out. But he's big, productive, strong and has elite athleticism for the position. He's likely to be there at #9.

Again Jolly will be suspended, Harrell may never be healthy , and I believe Cole is a FA (even if he isn't who cares). This team will need massive rebuilding on the defensive line and I don't really see any immediate help outside of Jenkins and he would thrive in either defense.

Well, if we do stay a 4-3, i see DT as the weakest area on the team, not just the defense, so i'd be fine with taking McCoy if he was still there when we pick. If we went to a 3-4 defense, obviously there would be some need for a young big fat body NT, but Pickett could probably hold up for one season at least. There were reports recently that the team was trying to lock up Cole, i guess he could survive as a backup NT in a 3-4, so long as he's not playing to many snaps.

I would love Mau inside in a 3-4, but if we don't get some pass-rushing OLBs it'd be moot.

I guess I should have finished reading the thread. Yup, thanks, and agree. I am very intrigued by the 3-4, but it would (will?) not be the smoothest transition, most likely. Though, some FA signings in addition to the draft would go a long ways.

we're talking tt here , right ? can you envision Tt signing any quality FA linebacker let alone ray lewis ? Tt and signing a quality FA just don't seem to go in the same sentence. he signed Woodson because Woodson had zero other offers on his table. Tt is not the guy who will go out and sign FA's to fit into his system. how many quality FA offensive lineman did he go out and sign when he implemented the ZBS ?

I have no problem with Nolan or switching to a 3-4. just don't get your hopes up and expect Tt to go out and actually sign a quality FA to fill the hole with a FA. it's not about the money- it's about TT's stubborn build by the draft Philosophy.

perhaps , i' m wrong about TT. perhaps Tt really wants to sign quality free agents, and because of his nerdish accountant personality, no quality FA will take him seriously. maybe if Tt started wearing sweatshirts rather than 3 piece suits and gained 50 pounds and looked like a former football player, FAs would want to sign with him and play for the Packers. Does Tt say he likes to build around the draft because drafted players have no say in the matter? Is Tt just a bad guy at influencing people and selling them on the idea of playing for Green bay?

TT reminds me of a pinkerton policeman going out west and getting into a gun fight at the Ok corral. Nobody is going to put their money on the pinkerton, no matter how well he did shooting at those circle targets back east.

Woodson had other offers. He openly admitted that he came to GB because they offered him the best contract. I'm fine with the way TT handles free agency. Unless you're 100% sure the guy you spend big money on is going to drastically help your club then steer clear of the big free agents. I wish he would have added DT depth last spring, but he didn't and I'm sure he regrets it. I'd offer Haynesworth everything we got this offseason.
