Football Outsiders CB rankings

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-a ... -al-harrisTheir stats show Al being pretty ridiculous when he played. I have to agree. That stretch of games after he came back when he gave up 1 pass in three games was incredible. Of course, we played Tenn, Chi, and Minny those three weeks, but it was still absurd for a guy who had just come back from an exploded spleen, and absurd for an NFL CB in general. Woodson also had an outstanding year, as we all saw. Tramon didn't rank very well for them, but its understandable with him being targeted so much. If you are going to throw to a WR against us, you wanted it to be against Tramon. All in all, I thought he had a very encouraging season.
I'm wondering if people think these stats are crap or if they agree with them. I think sometimes people let the few times a guy like Harris might get beat stick out and forget how rare it was for that to happen. I remember specifically someone complaining that Tramon should still be starting after Harris came back, and that was when Harris was completely shutting out his opponent.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see what happens with Harris this coming season. I hope they can figure out a way to maximize Al's abilities because he's still an excellent CB. I don't have many worries about Woodson in scheme that uses more zone.

I hope Harris stays. I think he's still got another good year in him even though we'll be playing more zone. Having said that, I also wouldn't mind drafting Malcolm Jenkins. It's a lot harder to find quality corners than it is to find linebackers. Espcially with guys like Ray Lewis, Bart Scott, and T-Sizzle on the free agent market.

I wonder how open Woodson would be to switching to SS full time? If he is, and Jenkins is available he wouldn't be the worst pick in the world provided Brown is off the board. Or Raji, I guess. Still not sold on him being a NT, but I'll trust Capers on that one.
Jenkins is the best defensive player in this class. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about him. Getting him at #9 isn't something I can really frown upon.
edit: I meant switching to SS.

Harris definitely had a much better season than he's given credit for by most. I thought he was lights out when he came back from injury for the most part. I really do worry about him playing a lot more zone, though. I guess I'm indifferent about keeping him. His age will really keep us from getting a high draft pick in return for him, but on the other hand I see him struggling in a zone-heavy scheme and given that this defense will have to experience some growing pains anyways, it seems wrong to use up whatever gas is left in his tank trying to learn a new scheme that he's not natural in and we'll only have him for a year or two with. At least Woodson can naturally adapt to a zone-heavy scheme and move to safety if need be.

I agree. If he falls to 9, I think we have to take him.

I'd worry about Woodson getting banged up if he moves to SS. I think Bigby is an ideal SS in this new scheme if healthy. He loves playing at the line and is pretty solid against the run. That's a big responsibility of the SS in the 3-4. Not that Woodson wouldn't be effective, but I think he's best suited at corner in the 3-4.

I wanted Jenkins last draft, so I certainly wouldn't be opposed to taking him this draft.

I am very open to Jenkins IF
- We use FA to get at least one impact player among DE NT OT LB - IF not we really need to use 9 on one of those positions then IMO or trade down.
- We can really get a 3rd for Harris as someone suggested. I do not believe anyone would give more than a 4th. But maybe? I feel Al definitely will have another good year and will be happy to keep him if we use #9 on OL or DL or LB. But as much as I like Harris getting a 3rd for an old guy while drafting a super replacement is a no brainer IMO.
Then I'd be delighted to draft Jenkins #9.
Keep Woodson at CB. His talent is wasted at SS.
Tramon & Jenkins compete for starter / nickel - eventual woodson heir.
Lee & Blackmon compete for dime - eventual nickel.

There are only three Free Agents I would overpay to get. Haynesworth, Suggs and Peppers. Give them a **** of money up front and hope they bite. No one else excites me.
I'm having a tough time coming up with a way to screw up the #9.
I'd be happy with either of the two Smiths or Monroe at OL.
I love Everette Brown and would be thrilled to land him to play OLB, but I also am very intrigued by Aaron Maybin. His learning curve is more steep but he could be a good one.
Jenkins is the best defender in this class IMO and while he likely doesn't make a monster impact right away and we have needs on the line, he would probably represent BPA and I won't complain if that's the route taken.
I really don't see a need for an ILB but I've liked Maualuga for years and I think he best fits playing inside in a 3-4. He's sort of boom or bust. If he pans out he could be really good but there's big questions about his discipline. Aaron Curry is another guy like Jenkins. Just a really good football player that doesn't represent a big need at the moment, but I couldn't complain if he was the Pack's pick.
Raji was best playing in one gap at BC and penetrating. I have a concern that as a DT that takes on multiple blockers and holds his ground that he wouldn't be nearly as effective. But like I said before, I'm trusting Capers.
Hell, I could be talked into Percy Harvin depending on how they see him fitting. You could do worse than add Reggie Bush part II at our pick.
Not a ton of guys I want no part of in this draft. Oher is one. I'm not huge on Orakpo either.

Of the 3 players you mentioned Suggs is the only guy I would pay, because he is used to the 3-4 defense, peppers at 29, is a BIG risk moving to that stand-up position and Haynesworth is just going to steal money, you can see this coming a mile away. I think Bart Scott should be priority #1 in the FA market because I believe above all he can be a leader and this defense is absolutely aching for a leader.....Suggs without a strong leader worries me a little as well. I am actually more in the Raji or Jenkins pick at #9, there seems to be some quality rush OLB's in this draft in the second round (Matthews, English). Realistically in free agency I would love for the Packers to sign Scott and perhaps a quality 3-4 defensive end, assuming one is available.

Capers will play whatever defense the players allow him to. He'll make every attempt to stay in a 3-4, but if it's not working (Pickett doesn't hold up, Kampman can't play standing up, we're getting gashed on the inside) he'll change. If Peppers or Haynesworth are ineffective in a 3-4 changes would be made.

Everette Brown is still the guy I want (unless a FA OLB is brought in), no doubt about it. But I couldn't really complain with Jenkins. I just want our pass rushing addressed in some way or another.
