Update on Jennings Contract Situation/Other Notes

Look for Eugene Parker, the agent for Packers WR Greg Jennings, to quietly and unobtrusively lay the groundwork for a new contract for his client, using the six-year, $42 million deal that Bernard Berrian received from the Vikings as a model. Berrian’s deal included $16 million in guaranteed money

Other Notes:

While our Packers sources would be surprised if the team had any serious thoughts about releasing 33-year-old WR Donald Driver, who they believe has plenty of gas left in the tank, they aren’t nearly as sure about 34-year-old CB Al Harris, who had a poor outing in the final game but an otherwise solid season.

Packers vice president Russ Ball, who manages the team’s salary cap, is attending and likely will meet sometime this week with Jennings’ agent, Eugene Parker, to get negotiations rolling. The fourth-year pro’s rookie deal could run out after the 2009 season – that’s assuming there’s a new collective-bargaining agreement that keeps the current free-agent eligibility rules in place – and as the Packers’ most dynamic offensive player at only age 25, he’s the kind of player teams don’t let get away.

“We would like to make sure he stays a Packer,” Thompson said Friday.

“I think (Jennings) is pretty special already,” coach Mike McCarthy said Friday. “He’s put up a couple really good years, and I think he’s getting ready to take off. Greg has that rare ability to play both long and short. He’s a very productive player in the short passing game and did a very nice job, particularly this last year, I really liked the way him and Aaron connected on down the field throws. He’s a pro, practices every day, very smart, plays all four positions. I think he’s getting ready to take off.”
Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

conflicting reports on Harris

Cornerback Al Harris will be 35 late next season but Thompson left no doubt about his future in Green Bay. The Packers will pay his $1.2 million roster bonus and play him.

"This is a guy that I don't see a lot of drop-off," Thompson said. "He's still a good player and we think he's going to be a good player again this year. We're not having a big youth movement."
