I would like us to sign him. Then draft Brown or Orakpo.

Jenkins/Pickett/Canty
Brown/Barnett/Hawk/Kampman

Yes please.

Well at least we apparently are inquiring. Nice of TT to at least do that.

I think there are cheaper and comparable options in the draft, but it's not like the Packers are up against the cap. I'd offer a very front loaded contract and see if he bites. If not, look to the draft and move on.

I'd be happy with Igor or Canty. I'd like to sign a vet who has played DE in a 3-4 and also a LB that has played in the scheme. We need some experience.

I'd be pleased with bringing him in. Glad we're showing interest, but I won't hold my breath.

He is a sure fit at the position. We do not have many players that are awesome fits for the 3-4 system, and he would be able to come in and fill a tough slot at the defensive end.

TT is going to sign someone if he sees it fit. Obviously he has missed a few times when something might fill a hole but if he went out and filled all the holes as everyone wanted him to with certain contracts we would have been 7-9 or 8-8 last year with Daniel Graham and some other average DE filling up our cap space. I think he will grab Canty if possible. He's going to have to acquire a DE for this defense somehow and by all indications they said they are not going to bring much more youth in save for some opportunity to trade for some high-end draft picks.

I totally agree. I like TT's strategy of primarily building through the draft but during a time like this where we are changing our D this much, experience would be nice. If you bring him and Bart Scott in, you now have one experienced guy at both of those levels of the D who can help the other guys and be like extra coaches on the field. And they are pretty good players too. We definitely need to find OT's, CB's, Defensive linemen, and linebackers and if you can fill a couple holes in FA with solid players, filling the other holes in the draft will be much easier.

I think we'll see Ted be a bit more aggressive in free agency this year, but he'll never go on the spending binge some people seem to always hope for.

DB, who in the draft do you feel is comparable? I see Tyson Jackson and Jarron Gilbert as being the top two guys. After that I think it gets a bit more questionable. Not a great class to look for a 3-4 DE IMO. I suppose Ziggy Hood. I'm not a Fili Moala fan - Trojan fans always got pissed at his Houdini disappearing acts.

Beyond that I think you're looking at much more mid- or late-round guys, which you certainly could hit on, but I'm not sure I'd consider it comparable to the top 3-4 DE in the FA market.

MiG, I'd look at Kyle Moore, Rulon Davis, Michael Johnson and Zach Potter. Each are 3rd round or later. Johnson probably offers the most upside of anyone on that list, though I think Kyle Moore's best days are in front of him. I only watched Davis and Potter once but they fit the profile of a big, weak-side 3-4 DE.

I'd be happy with Canty, but I don't think we're desperate for him by any means.

Actually looks like Titans are making a push for Canty now.

I don't see Johnson in a 3-4. At least not successfully. I think Potter is the guy I'd like most of the guys you listed.

But that you're listing mid- to late-round guys is just my point. I know it's getting down to semantics, but I don't see how they're comparable to the top DE on the market right now. You may hit, you may not. I'd be comfortable with either of the 'elite' 34DE prospects - Jackson or Gilbert - but they'll be a reach in the first, and out-of-reach in the second.

I don't think it's a desperate need either - was just trying to make a point. I'd feel more confident with a proven free agent than a guy taken in the last half of the draft.

Semantics is sort of at the heart of the issue. I think Canty is a good player, but not a difference maker. Maybe he's the 'top DE on the market', but if the market is complete crap then that doesn't say a whole lot. If the Packers could land him, great. But I think for what they would have to pay him I'd almost rather use a mid-round pick on Johnson or Moore, get similar production (probably not right away, both need to add strength) and pay a fraction of the cost.

To me, the money really isn't an issue. We're well under the cap.

What I like is that, with us making the transition to a 3-4, his experience would be nice. And it's one less thing we'd have to address in this draft. Look at it again next year when it's supposed to be loaded with great potential 34DEs.

I do wonder what kind of cash Canty is looking to get

I might be understating how much he really is looking to get, I suppose. I doubt it's earth shattering, but his price could be higher than it would be otherwise because of the teams making the switch to the 3-4 this offseason. Still, we aren't struggling to stay under the cap.

Canty is going to be way to expensive, especially for a 3-4 end...I have heard that he wants to be a traditional 4-3 end.....I believe the Skins were after him originally and now the Seahawks are looking at him.

hmmmm how ironic, the Packers know what Canty is going to cost, they want himto visit GB bad.....but he is not sure GB is for him, has visits scheduled Sat in NY with the Giants and Sunday/Monday in Seattle............I have always said that many Packer fans are not aware how difficult it is to get the right FA's to GB.
