MALONE COULD SURPRISE AT END

" The Packers have contacted a handful of free agent defensive ends, but as of Wednesday night, not one has been invited for a visit. Why? “To be honest, Ted Thompson isn’t sure any of those players are better than Alfred Malone,” said a person close to the situation. Malone, who spent the final month of last season on the active roster, is viewed by defensive coordinator Dom Capers as a legitimate contender to start opposite Cullen Jenkins. “He certainly has the size you look for at that position,” stated a former scout. “With Justin Harrell still hurting and Johnny Jolly likely to be wrapped up in his court case, Malone should get plenty of chances to prove himself over the next few months.”

Guess who was Houston’s head coach at the time. “Capers has liked Malone for years,” said the source. “Now it’s up to the player to take advantage of the opportunity.” Whether that happens remains to be seen, but understanding why Thompson isn’t desperate to overspend on one of the many flawed defensive ends available in free agency has become much clearer. He may have a better prospect on his own roster."

I can't believe this is true, I just can't. We would at least draft a DE in the first, we'd have to.

I don't understand the fascination of other team's trash. There's a reason these 2nd tier guys like Olshansky and Holliday hit free agency.

If I'm signing a free agent, here's what I'm looking for:

- backup to someone special
- relatively young

I'd rather the team try hard to unearth a gem than go for a player some team cut because he wasn't anything special as a starter.

Kevin Burnett to me would make for an outstanding signing. Versitile, prime of his career, knows the 3-4 and played behind Demarcus Ware.

But San Diego could have brought back Olshansky if they wanted. They know that him leaving creates a hole. They still don't want him. I understand you could say the same for TO, who under certain circumstances I'd take, but one is still an impact player and the other never was.

I mostly agree. I was first to mention Burnett in FA thread but I'm not sold on his pass rush - but worth a visit.

I think IF you can get bargain prices on older vets who can still contribute - like NE you do it. It takes 53 guys over the long year with injuries.

In year three and some of year two. All reports say he's on his best behavior when he arrives. Key is not to give him a long term deal.

Can't say I'm excited, but I am 100% sure Capers knows more than me, and I am fairly certain we will see a free agent or draftee on the DL to help out.

This board is laughable...who are any of you to say Malone can't play?? Malone is an end in a G-damn 3'4 defense, if he can hold the point of attack and occasionally get penetration what more do you want? That is right, he has to be a big name so you can waste $18 million on him and his 10 career sacks, I forgot. Tha majority of you would not truly understand if the end in a 3-4 did his job or not....most people could not name the DE's in many 3-4 defenses...so just relax.

You're laughable. You can find something wrong with anybody that's been brought up except Alford Malone for some reason. Now I know where all the money's going that Ted doesn't spend. He must be giving it out to guys like you.

Brainded Ned, nice to hear from you, Alford Malone, any relation to Steve ALford? Who do you want big Ned to be your starting DE in the Packers 3-4.....c'mon Ned, with your superior football knowledge you must have someone in mind....sounds like you would have LOVED to have paid $18 million for a solid but unspectacular DE. I am smart enough to wait until free agency and the draft are over, and the season begins before I judge this team. The good news is that people like you bitched like crazy before the 13-3 year, I choose to remain optimistic because I think with the coaching changes alone they are a much better team.
