Packers have strong in interest in Steeler free agent safety
By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel

It doesn't seem like much of a need position, but the Packers are seriously considering adding a safety with 3-4 experience.

On Tuesday they had Cleveland free agent Mike Adams in for a visit and on Wednesday they hosted Pittsburgh's Anthony Smith. Technically, Smith is not an unrestricted free agent. He was scheduled to become a restricted free agent, but the Steelers did not offer him a tender offer.

According to two NFL sources, Smith has drawn a lot of interest from the Packers, who probably think his experience playing behind Troy Polamalu and Ryan Clark would make him a valuable asset to have in the secondary. It's unclear exactly why the Steelers didn't offer Smith a tender offer, but some have speculated that he might have gotten in defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau's doghouse early in his career.

The 6-1, 200-pound Smith played sparingly in 14 games last year, finishing with just nine tackles. The previous year, he started 10 of 16 games after filling in for Clark, who had a spleen injury. He had 69 tackles and two interceptions.

But Smith didn't quite fit the type of free safety LeBeau wanted and so Clark became the starter last year. Smith can play both strong and free safety, but he plays aggressively, which is not how the Steelers want their free safety to play. They prefer he play deep.

There are other teams involved with Smith, but the Packers seem to have their foot in the door with him.

One of the reasons the Packers seem to be going after safeties is that they're probably unsure whether they'll be able to retain both Atari Bigby and Nick Collins, both of whom are unrestricted free agents next year (providing there's a salary cap). What's more, it's probably a priority that they have someone calling out coverages who knows the Steeler defense inside and out.

Smith was a third-round pick of the Steelers in 2006.

Some may remember Smith for guaranteeing a victory over New England during their perfect 2007 regular season and then getting beat for two touchdowns in a 34-13 loss. His comments drew a lot of attention leading up to the game and teammates passed it off as immaturity from a second-year player. The Patriots didn't take it lightly and quarterback Tom Brady even had words with Smith after throwing for a touchdown against him.

Athletically, Smith has the all the tools, AFC North source says
By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel

An AFC North official gave a glowing report about safety Anthony Smith's athletic ability, but said the mental part of his game is where he needs the most improvement.

The source said that if Smith came to the Packers he'd be one of the most gifted players on their defense. According to scouting combine records, Smith had a vertical jump of 41 inches. His 40-yard dash time was 4.71 seconds, which ranked behind the top safeties in the draft that year.

"He's got a lot of talent, no doubt about that," the source said. "He's just got to get the mental side together. That's the thing that will make him a real good safety. He hasn't shown he can do that yet. But if he goes there they have (safeties coach) Darren Perry. He knows Darren. He would help him a lot."

The official said that he thought Smith was probably a better strong safety than free safety and getting a chance to play somewhere other than Pittsburgh might help him. He said the Steelers seemed to sour on him a little last year because he wasn't playing well on special teams.

Not receiving a restricted free agent tender offer might be enough to make Smith realize nothing is given.

"Dom does a good job with safeties," the official said of defensive coordinator Dom Capers. "He'd probably be a good fit there. Sometimes getting a new start is the best thing for a guy like him. A lot of times guys will get it. The light will go on."

He was a real nice prospect coming out of Syracuse. He wasn't regarded as a big hitter, but more of a coverage safety.

This is the type of FA I'd be interested in. Still young, still has upside, probably needs a change of scenery. Josh Bullocks is another safety I'd like to bring in.

Why would the Packers be unsure whether they can retain Collins/Bigby? TT is has been a tight wad so we're able to bring them back. Along with Jennings and Kampman next off-season. Lock them up.

So we're switching to the 3-4, LeBeau is considered a great DC and he doesn't think Smith fits in but we have a strong interest? Interesting.

I'm not sold yet on Bigby. He had part of one good season. He needs to have a whole good season.

I've been wanting them to bring in a safety as a backup that has some experience in the 3-4, plus we have nothing backing up Bigby and Collins. When Bigby got hurt last year it was a mess because the rest of the safeties on the roster sucked.

Wasn't this the guy who predicted the win against the Patriots two seasons ago?

Ah, thank you. I was too lazy to read the entire post.

Not a starter. Does not qualify as a FA to placate Jollay.

Nice we're looking at bodies though. Might be a starter someday.

I like that we're looking at players (also Burnett) that have potential that couldn't start because they had studs in front of them. Kind of a James Lee/Ryan Grant mindset.

What, someone not sold on Bigby? His injury was a BIG reason we sucked on defense I thought. Best player we had second half of 07-08.

Maybe I'm mistaken.

And yes, I get tired of my shtick too, if anyone is wondering.

I honestly was going to ask, so thanks for clearing that up for me.

Things have come full circle. I joined this board to complain about TT (Tim Thomas) and really haven't felt as strong a need to bitch endlessly until now, with this TT.

Eh, I'll shut up in a week or so, or God forbid when we sign any starting calibur player in the meanwhile.

Until then, sorry.

What make you think there are any starters left? Like I said, only 14 teams have signed prospective starters. Well may be running dry Jollay. Maybe the remaining talent simply isn't that good?

Yea that is true we are realy thin at saftey, signing Smith would give us a little depth.

I haven't given up on Rouse and I'm comfortable with him as a backup. Smith would provide solid depth at SS, though.

Rouse was a little dissapointing last season,I had higher expectations for him after 2007.I havent given up on him either though,at worst he's still a solid back up.Collins/Bigby/Rouse/Smith I think would be a very solid rotation.

They can always play Woodson back there, as well.

I haven't 100 percent given up on Rouse (about 75 percent given up on him), but if i was GM, i certainly wouldn't count on him being able to be a reliable backup at safety. If he can GREATLY improve his play, that would be swell, but i'd want good competition in place for Rouse in case in camp he looks like the same terrible tackling/brainfarting in coverage guy he was last year.

We paid a price last year by having nobody of any quality backing up the safeties last year and i'd rather not see it repeated again this year if either starting safety gets hurt. There were various problems with the defense last year, but very poor depth at both DL and safety were right at the top because the backups weren't just downgrades as you'd expect a backup to be, they were instead big liabilities.

He's a backup for a reason. Just about every team's backups are a liability in one form or another.

Health and schedule are everything if you're a middle of the pack team. Stay healthy and catch the right teams at the right time and you're in the playoffs. Suffer some key injuries and play a brutal schedule and you're winning six games.

Yeah, actually I would go for a young corner if anything; I thought Harris or Woodson or both could/would play a little safety by now.

There are many starters left aside from the ones we have let get away. Also by trade there are presumably some options.

If you gave Woodson a full training camp at safety I'm sure he'd be great there. Harris would struggle, though. He's just not a very good player in space.
