It didn't take me long to get depressed reading this, Sherer is the starter heading in. I am pretty much resigned to expect a 7 win season.

Hopefully we can beat them in OT after their kicker misses 3 PATs.

If I'm an opposing defense I pack 8 in the box vs. Scherer and have everyone up tight. Clay is our only weapon aside from underneath passes because Scherer throws ducks on anything past 10 yards. Stop Clay(and Brown) and the underneath stuff to Gilreath/Toon and we are a useless offense.

Oh, and if Scherer starts this year that is one thing.

I'm no coach, and Phillips/Budamyr may honestly not be ready...but if Tolzien starts next year because of seniority I'm going to stop even watching this team play.

Bret's record has been worse every year. The more of his own recruits on the team, the less wins we've had. He's lucky he was Barry's hand picked successor.

He needs the team to overachieve next year.

It is all on paper, but I think 2010's team could make some sort of noise. He's gotta make it there, though.

I guess I really don't care. I have some confidence that his recruits may finally make worth of themselves but the Michigan State game last year made me want to fire the guy on the spot. He honestly wasn't even paying attention to the clock and the situation of the game. He missed a number of times he should have called a timeout and then called it at the worst possible time. Alvarez was not the best in-game coach either but I guess he made do.

I just hate coaches that have too much confidence in their team and don't leave a back door open. I once saw Alvarez not let Purdue score 3 plays in a row with under a minute to go and up by 1 or 2 with Purdue inside our 5. Purdue kicked the extra point length FG to win it with 5 seconds left. Last year Bret let the clock roll down against MSU and could have called a time out and put 35 seconds on the clock for his team with good field position. Then he missed that opportunity and instead of at least letting the kicker take a rushed FG he calls timeout with 8 seconds left or something like that. Little things, but it is the mentality of these guys that always pissed me off. I get the idea that we need a 1950's offense to be successful because it is hard for us to bring in the mega athlete guys but this "tough-minded" conservative strategy always bothers me.

Whoops, end of rant.

Sherer has plenty of time to lose a job he did not earn.

QB is obviously a big issue for the team, but i'm just as worried about the defense, especially among the front seven.

On paper we have a ton of highly rated linemen that we recruited. Obviously I don't see that panning out.

And yeah, probably the worst position under BB has been middle linebacker. Levy and Casillas were athletic and had solid careers but Hodge, McFadden, etc. sucked. Those guys are the quarterback of the defense.

Yeah, hopefully a few guys can meet potential in the front 7 by 2010.

I think we are going to have a solid 2-year window there. The line will be at the end of their careers...we have actual talent at RB for the first time in 3 years(well, talent that doesn't get suspended all the time...hopefully Clay doesn't). I like Toon and hopefully Appleton makes an impact. Gilreath making some plays, somebody not named Scherer or Tolzien at QB (fingers crossed). The defense will be the key. If they can grow this year then we are talking about a team that will contend for the big ten title.

In other UW news, P.J. "crash and run really slow" Hill and Casillas signed with the Saints.

I don't think this means anything. It's not like they play their first game on Saturday. This gives Phillips the summer to progress and develop without all the hype about being named the starter. I'll wait to see what the depth chart looks like on Sept. 5th, I don't care what it looks like on May 5th.

Could this be Bielema's last year?

If they continue the progression they've been on the past few years, yes.

Unless we win 6 or less or don't get a bowl game, I don't think so. Barry loves the guy.

If the football team continues to struggle and Alvarez doesn't do anything about it, it won't matter how much he loves Bielema, they'll both be looking for new jobs.

Lisa Stone got a contract extenstion through 2011 I think. Wouldn't be surprised if the football wins 6 games and Bielema gets extended through 2020.

Yeah, she did, but they had to do that. It would kill any chance she had at recruiting if she just got another 1 year contract.

The point is Lisa Stone sucks, so instead of firing her, they gave her an extension.

Barry took a lot of flack for annointing him his successor before he was even named athletic director. I can't see him getting fired. Barry is 62, he'll probably hang it up in the next 2-3 years and let the new AD pick the next coach.
