Who gets the 5th WR spot?

Post#1 » by El_Lobo_3 » Thu May 28, 2009 5:24 pm

We are comfortably set at WR heading into the season, assuming everyone stays healthy this time...but who would you want to get that last spot behind Jennings, Driver, Jones and Nelson? Martin has the most experience and has obviously played with the rest of the WRs and Aaron the most, but I really like what Simmons and Swain bring to the table also...it's a tough call and probably too early to tell until camp rolls around, but we might as well start talking about it now.

I think Rodgers and Martin are very tight, so that could be some factor beside on-field production.

I don't really like any of them. If any of those guys ends up getting a lot of playing time we're screwed. And Jones better bring it this year. The coaching staff wasn't happy with him last year and with Driver getting older and Jennings contract status in limbo we need Jones to step up.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I'll say Jamarko Simmons.

I'd love to see Heckendorf make the team but that isn't happening in all likelihood. I still can't believe he looked at the WR corp of the Packers and thought, "Yep, that's where I'll have my best shot".

Money is on Martin but he won't be here after this season and for that I'm guessing Simmons.

Martin and Rodgers are tight because they were both on the scout team for so long. Rodgers felt comfortable having him around last year. Now with a season under his belt we can do better than Ruvell.

I have a feeling Martin will get the spot based on experience and familiarity with Rodgers. I really hope Simmons steps up in camp. That guy looks like he has serious potential. I watched a clip of one of their games, and he looked like a DE lining up at WR and making great catches across the middle of the field.

Martin. Simmons, Swain, Williams to the practice squad.

This will be one of the more interesting battles of training camp. Based on everything i've read/seen on Simmons he has a real shot at getting that 5th spot. Ruvell is tight with Aaron, so that may play some kind of roll when it comes time to announce cuts. If Ruvell gets cut and Taucher doesn't come back, then Rodgers would be losing 2 of his best friends on the team. I really would like to keep Simmons some how, even if it's on the practice squad. It would be great to see how Jennings and him got along, especially because Simmons broke all of Jennings's school records.

MD is right. If any of these guys become our #3 WR or higher because of injuries, we're probably in trouble. Improvements in our passing game are going to come from Jordy Nelson getting better, James Jones bouncing back and staying healthy, and Finley establishing himself at tight end.

With that said, Martin doesn't offer much of anything beyond catching the ball, so if one of these guys can do that and prove to be more versatile (ie an asset on special teams or not just an intermediate threat), he will make the team over Martin. I'm excited about Jamarko Simmons and I know they like Swain, too, but I think the sleeper is Jake Allen. He's 6'4 and has a lot more speed and suddenness in his game than Martin. The coaching staff really likes him based off everything I've read.
