Green Bay - A little more than a year after an F5 tornado shredded his house and destroyed the high school where he produced four National Football League players, Aplington-Parkersburg (Iowa) football coach Ed Thomas died after being shot in the school's weight room this morning.
According to various reports, Thomas was shot in the head at point-blank range around 8 a.m. while he supervised the school's morning weight-lifting program. A suspect is in custody and is believed to be a student.
No other details were available.
Thomas had a career record of 292-84 in 37 seasons as a head coach, 34 of them at Aplington-Parkersburg.vHe produced four NFL players from the tiny area of about 1,000 people: Kampman, Casey Wiegmann, Jared DeVries and Brad Meester. Thomas was named NFL coach of the year in 2005.
