Backup QB

Since its such a dead time thought I'd start a new topic. I know the backup QB spot was very scrutinized spot last year, especially after the Tampa Bay game. Ted took alot of crap for not having a veteran. Well as it stands nothing has changed except Brohm and Flynn are no longer rookies. Just curious if you are any more confident if Rodgers goes down? I have a feeling that Brohm is going to comeback improved, but its not a given. I don't know what is on the market that is really that much better, as far as a veteran goes. I think with Flynn, what you see is what you get. Brohm has potential to improve, and as a 2nd round pick, lets hope...if anything for trade value.

But just curious what the general opinion is for this spot. I have high hopes for the season. I really think this could be a sleeper team that is laying in the weeds again, but I think as it stands if Rodgers goes down we could be in trouble. Hopefully Brohm improves enough to be a good stop gap but he's young and will be inconsistent. It could be a potential issue again. At least Rodgers appears to be a pretty tough cookie.

From what I've read Brohm is still pretty much terrible and sits 3rd on the depth chart still behind Flynn. I would definitely feel more comfortable if we had a veteran behind Rodgers who could come in and manage a game should something happen to A-Rodg.

Notable FA QB's:

1. Brian Griese
2. JP Losman
3. Trent Green
4. Jamie Martin

Not much of a market, but I would definitely have no problem picking up Griese or even Losman.

JP Losman is kind of intriguing. He has some experience and might have an upside with a change of scenery. He's still fairly young as well. But I would assume he may be looking at a place that long term will give him a chance to start.

If they were to sign Losman, one would hope that they could maybe deal Flynn for a late draft pick or that somebody would trade for Brohm's potential.

Trent Green retired.

I've always felt it's good to have one vet QB as either #2 or #3. The problem is there just aren't very many decent QB's out there. If Rodgers goes down we're screwed whether we play Flynn, Brohm or one of the available FA's.

I think if we cross our fingers that Rodgers stays healthy for 1 more year then I think Flynn or Brohm will hopefully be experienced enough to not even care about looking for those other guys.

And for this year, I'd still rather roll with Flynn. I think we are screwed if we go with Griese anyways.

I watched some practices they had a few weeks ago, and yes, Brohm still is terrible. He was holding the ball far too long, overthrowing his targets, and obviously looked flustered. He looks like his confidence is really shaken. Hopefully he can gain some of that back over training camp, but the way he looked during the mini camps wasn't very promising.

On the plus side, Raji looked like a beast!

The backup QB dilemma is still one of my big question marks for this year. Basically, I'll say the same thing I did last year. If Rodgers goes down, we're F'ed. Brohm and Flynn both, to put it bluntly, suck. The problem is the other QB's that are still available all suck too, so it's a pick-your-poison type scenario.

Maybe we should talk to Brent Farve. Put him in competition with Flynn and Brohm for the 2nd string spot.

That would be hilarious if Ted called up Bus Cook about the possibility of Favre coming in as the veteran back up to Rodgers. That would be so awesome. Actually that would bring the circus back to Green Bay which I am glad its across the state line now.

I've also heard Brohm's confidence is not too high. Hopefully he can come in the preseason and play well, that could do wonders to his confidence.

But I do agree with the assessment that there is nothing out there that is that much better. A guy like Jeff Garcia would be okay, but retreads like Griese, Frerotte, etc. Eh, I'll pass. I'd rather take my chances with a young guy. If he sucks, cut him and move on. Its not like its much of an investment. At least not with a guy like Flynn. Brohm was a 2nd round pick, so a little more is invested in him.

I heard the same thing about Brohm from some other observers. He just doesn't know when to throw the ball and can't handle any sort of pressure. Real disappointing because I was pretty optimistic about his chances.

I think Flynn is a real find and worth developing into a solid #2. The team respects him and trusts him, and the guys at PFW think very highly of him. I would keep Flynn as the #2 and only bring in a more experienced vet if/when something happens to Rodgers. No sense rocking the boat until it's already taking on water...

If Ted did that I would die laughing. That would be the ultimate insult to Favre and his camp. I hope he does this just to piss Farve off.

I think that if Rodgers goes down this year (god forbid), Thompson would have no other option than to sign a vet QB. I can see Flynn taking over for a game or two, but if Rodgers were to sustain a lengthy injury, I'm willing to bet a lot of people on this board would be pretty pissed if TT just sat on his hands.

If Rodgers is out for any length of time the team is screwed whether we go with Flynn/Brohm or an older vet we pick off the scrapheap. The same can be said with most teams. There just aren't a lot of quality backups out there. So if TT decides to stand pat on QB rather than sign a retread that's fine with me.
