Kevin Seifert: MIN WR Depth >>> GB WR Depth

INSANE
The Vikings suddenly have the deepest group of receivers in the NFC North, so much so that their leading receiver from the past two years -- Bobby Wade -- accepted a demotion and pay cut to stay with the team. Bernard Berrian, Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin figure to get most of the playing time this season, if everyone is healthy. Wade will provide insurance for three players who have been limited by injuries at various times in recent years. Youngsters Darius Reynaud and Jaymar Johnson also have playmaking ability.

As it turns out, four sentences -- on a Saturday morning over the holiday weekend -- caused quite a stir. For the third bullet point in our daily installment of “Three and out,” I wrote that Minnesota has the deepest group of receivers in the NFC North.

Gasp! Ohhhhhhhh! No he didn’t!

I think it’s pretty clear that the Packers’ 1-2 punch of Greg Jennings and Donald Driver is unmatched in Minnesota. Jennings and Driver are without question more skillful. But in a top-to-bottom comparison, it gets more interesting. If a starter went down in Green Bay or Minnesota, which team is better equipped to absorb the loss? To me, that’s the definition of depth.

Seifert covered the Vikings for a while, and in every blog he writes that is pretty evident.

Errr....that's because the starters aren't any good. If I were a #3 o4 #4 caliber WR Minnesota is the first place I'd look to go. You immediately become a #1 or #2.

And Bobby Wade was cut.

Berrian has averaged a dynamite 39 catches in his 5 seasons. Jennings has averaged 60 in his 3 years. And he wasn't the #1 receiver. Rice caught 46 his first two years. Jones, in a part time role, caught 67. And of course there is Driver. Harvin could turn out to be pretty good. Or he could be in jail in 3 years.

Harvin is easily their most talented WR. It's just a matter if he can put it all together. He looked pretty damn quick in their first game.

I really, really like Percy Harvin... I think he has superstar, top 5 WR type of potential...

Sadly for the guy who wrote the article, Greg Jennings already is or is very close to a top 5 WR. Donald Driver would be their number 1 WR while Nelson and Jones would be starters over Berrian (in my opinion) if he didn't have such a massive contract.

Percy Harvin is a WR in the same sense that Reggie Bush is a WR. He's a playmaker but I don't ever expect him to be Steve Smith.

Lay off the crack pipe is all that really needs to be said about this. Even most Vikings fans would say he's wrong I'd guess.

I think he could be a Steve Smith type player. I agree that Bush and Harvin have some similarities, though I think Harvin has even more talent and is better equipped to actually break a tackle, where as when Bush gets hit he goes to the ground almost immediately.

It's a freaking joke, as evident by virtually everyone in the comments section saying that he's crazy. That's a rarity at ESPN. Usually people will argue just for the sake of arguing.

And I haven't seen this point mentioned: if we're going to talk about ex-WR Bobby Wade, how about ex-WR Ruvell Martin?

Additionally, the Vikings' receiving numbers are more spread out than our receivers', because their receivers aren't as good and no one steps up to take over. We have two receivers that thoroughly destroy theirs, and have been the focal point of our passing game. Tell me this, what would happen to the Vikings receivers' numbers if GJ and DD were added to the team? Now tell me what would happen to the Packers' if they were taken away.

Seifert's a dumbass. Need look no further than: "...covering the Minnesota Vikings for the Minneapolis Star Tribune for eight years. He lives in the Twin Cities"

ETA And it's seriously funny that he's factoring into the equation a WR that got CUT.

I don't. Harvin was a runningback in high school and made the overwhelming majority of his plays on the ground in college. He's in no way a natural receiver, whereas Steve Smith is the most natural WR in the entire NFL (maybe next to Moss).

Maybe he gets there but for now I'm not worried that he's going to be a huge threat on the outside.

I was going to add something to that discussion, but just realized that it's been dead for 8 days - and that Wade was probably still with the team when it was written.

This would make sense if he said the Cardinals had better WR depth.

He's on crack if he really thinks the Queens WR corps is better than ours.

If I were Minny I'd rather have the Lions WRs.

Agreed.

Calvin Johnson by himself > Vikings WR core.

Without question, green bay has the best WRs in the division and it's not really close. The only teams that I for sure think have better wrs are Arizona and new England.

Just means Brent has one less excuse when Rodgers totally out performs him this year. Brent has the better RB, O-Line, and now WRs. Ole #4 should be able to put up much much better numbers than Rodgers...haha.

We'll let it go when he's not playing in Purple. I don't understand, given the way that Favre has acted and the fact that he's playing for the Packer's biggest rival of the past two decades, that Packer fans are supposed to just "let it go." I will let it go eventually, and I understand the frustration that he seems to come up in every discussion, but it's not like mentioning him is a reach here. We're talking about the receivers on his team...
