Packers bring in RT Levi Jones in for workout

Post#1 » by JHSFIVE » Tue Sep 29, 2009 3:43 am

I guess it couldn't hurt. From what I remember, he was pretty solid for cincy.

Many regard him as the best tackle available in FA

Free agent LT Levi Jones worked out for the Packers on Monday.

The Packers are more desperate for help at the right tackle spot where Allen Barbre is getting dominated. This is probably just precautionary in case LT Chad Clifton's ankle injury keeps him out longer than expected.

If he is an upgrade over what we have, how can we not sign him? Regardless of whether Clifton comes back healthy, we need that depth if its available. It's not like we don't have the money.

I called for this about two weeks ago. Sign him now.

Isn't this guy a former Pro Bowler? For some reason his name seems very familiar.

JS claiming that he would not be an option at right tackle since he hasn't played there before. Also saying that if Clifton can't play that we "might" sign him. Even if Clifton is good to go, I think we all see he isn't the healthiest guy anymore, what could it possibly hurt to bring in the extra depth.

Not sure if he was a pro bowler but he was a very high draft pick and very highly touted, but just can't stay healthy.

I don't know why he wouldn't be an option at right tackle. If he's in shape and ready to play he has to be a better option than Barbre, doesn't he?

So, just because he's never played RT before means that he can't? The coaches couldn't work with him to see if he could do the job over there? I know the positions aren't the same, but why rule him out without even trying it? And, as has been mentioned, even if Clifton is ready, we sure could use the depth.

If you can play LT, you can basically play all over the offensive line. LT is by far the most difficult position to play on the o-line. Not to mention it's the $$$ position of the line. We need the depth regardless, I'd be pretty happy with TT if he brought Jones in. It just can't hurt. Jared Allen is my number one concern going into Monday's game. I'd feel a hell of a lot better if we had Clifton back at LT and the rest of the line back to their natural positions. Levi would be a nice security blanket.

My concern with anyone they might bring in is they probably wouldn't be ready to play Monday night.

Tt needs to bring in a few Vet tackles or even a gaurd and we need to fix this offensive line if we want to go anywhere in the playoffs if we even get there at this point. i really dont want to see Rodgers running for his life for 13 more games, and I dont want to see Grant being stuffed a 200 times and wasting that many downs.

i would give up a 1st round pick for a solid tackle at this point to save the season. TT just throws 1st round picks away on garbage players anyway.. "cough cough" Hawk, Harrell, Nelson.

I mentioned this in the Queens thread, Tausch had a workout for the Chiefs today
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Jordy Nelson wasn't a 1st round pick and convenient how you left out Aaron Rodgers.

This has to be done. I agree if he can play LT he can play RT, he'd be learning our whole offense so if he started from scratch learning RT or both why on earch couldnt he? It's not like you're asking a Scott Wells to play RT, the dudes been a tackle his whole career I'm sure he's capable of playing on the other side of the qb.

Ill give alittle credit where credit is due.

2005 1st round pick 25 Aaron Rodgers
2005 2nd round pick 51 Nick Collins
2 great picks, but did we need Aaron Rodgers then? No we did not.
had a another round 2 pick # 58 and picked another 8 players who were garbage.

2006 1st round pick 5 Aj Hawk (a Bust) You can find a ton of LBs in any draft in late rounds as good or better then Hawk. Guy should not even start on any team. Sorry but it was easy to see Hawk was a bust from the get go.
2006 2nd round grabed Greg Jennings and some other decent players like Jolly andhalf of our garbage O-Line.

2007 1st round pick 16 Justin Harrel. By far the worst 1st worst round pick I ever seen the Packers take. Everyone was scratching there head on this pick when TT made it. (I honestly prefer that Reynolds DE bust years before this to Harrell.

2nd round drafted Brandon Jackson another bad pick, followed by James Jones, Rouse, Barbre. This has to be one of the worst drafts any team ever had.

2008 Traded down from the 1st round pick 30 to the 2nd round pick #36 for Nelson, 2nd round pick wasted on Brian Brohm, and 3rd round wasted on Patric Lee. Another garbage draft with nothing really to show.

You can look at what other teams drafted in like te last 4 years and I would put TT as one of the worst for drafting. The guy is a bad drafter and he doesnt sign any FAs. You could be some random Joe and probly draft better then TT did in previous drafts just listening to Mel Kipper or watching other peoples draft boards.

Raji over Crabtree is another bust move. Crabtree might be holding out but he was the better pick. And whos to say the Packers wouldnt of been able to sign him.

Crabtree over Raji is a bust move when the guy might not even play the entire season, and plays WR, a position we are stacked at?

If TT is one of the worst drafters, we would be a team that has no hope of the playoffs right now because we really don't use free agency at all.

Rodgers-drafted
Jennings-drafted
Matthews-drafted
Raji-drafted
Jolly-drafted
Hawk-drafted
Finley-drafted
Collins-drafted
Colledge-drafted
Spitz-drafted
Sitton-drafted
Blackmon-drafted
Crosby-drafted

Pickett-FA
Woodson-FA
Bigby-FA
T. Williams-FA
Kuhn-FA

Grant-trade
D. Lee-trade

Now, I will readily admit he hasn't addressed the tackle situation adequately so far that he's been here, and that is one of his main criticisms, but really, almost the entire rest of the roster is looking pretty good right now. The 20 players I have listed above all get significant playing time or play a big role on the team, and were acquired by Thompson. He doesn't use FA much, but as you can see, when he does, he uses it well. The only significant playing time guys left over from the Sherman era are Kampman, Jenkins, Barnett, Poppinga, Harris, Clifton.

Now, if the Packers bomb out this year mostly with TT's guys, then I think you'll have a beef. But it is early. Also keep in mind this team is very young (youngest in the NFL again), so this core of guys has some time to grow together. The OT position needs to be addressed and we are going to need more secondary help here very soon, but overall this roster is in pretty good shape.

Think about it this way. If we get one more stud corner and one stud OT, what areas on this roster are you really concerned about in the next few seasons?
