When do you think Ted will give Collins an extention?

Post#1 » by nyckid414 » Thu Dec 24, 2009 1:55 am

I know he still will be under contract for a couple more years with the labor agreement next year. But how long will Ted let this situation ride out. Collins is all about coming to work and doing his job, but I have to think it could come back to bite us in the a**. He's having another very good year and is all over the field. Do you think Thompson is doing the right thing? We all have seen that #36 can play in the 3-4 now. So what is he waiting for? It could end up costing us more to sign him later than sooner.

At some point.

He's going to be an RFA and TT isn't dumb enough to let him get away.

The tag for safeties isn't all that high so he may just go that route.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I think the fact he hasn't gotten one yet is because Collins wants to wait it out and won't sign one now.

I could be wrong...

He wanted one pretty badly before the season, so I don't see what would have changed during the season since he said his agent was dealing with all of it so he wasn't distracted.

Capers would kill him if he let Collins get away somehow. You need good safeties in an aggressive 3-4, and Collins happens to be one of the best while also being a great fit with his athleticism (can cover a lot of space in a zone) and playmaking ability. They ask a lot of Collins even if it doesn't always show up on the zoomed in TV view.

I think that Ted is banking on there not being a CBA in place, and that most of these players will be defaulted to the Packers for another season. I think that Collins will get the franchise tag, and that Jolly will be extended when there is a more clear end to his legal troubles.

Unfortunately with Jolly his legal issues (and probably suspension) won't be determined until after free agency has started.

I fully understand that if no new CBA is ratified and thus Collins isn't unrestricted, that's just something he has to accept. That said, i do think Ted needs to be careful here. Collins works hard and seems to have good character, along with top shelf talent at a position that's vital in this defense. I'd prefer to see Ted try and work out some extension for Collins so long as Collins/his agent don't ask for silly money. Collins will be due for an extension eventually anyways, i'd rather not see bridges burned with him because i think he's one of the top 5 players on the team and he's still young.

Collins has been offered an extension but he wants the world when it comes to money. He'll eventually re-sign when he sees nobody else is going to dish out the money he wants and TT would offer more money than anyone else.
