Josh Cribbs on the trade block?

Post#1 » by JHSFIVE » Thu Jan 7, 2010 6:22 am

Imagine the dimension that he would bring to the return game/ST(which IMO is one of our top flaws.

We'd have the cap room.

Thoughts?

He'll get the contract he wants from Cleveland, they aren't trading him.

You don't think Jordy's doing a bang up job?

Hell, they can have Aaron Kampman for him.

I would rather draft a RB who is a good receiver out of the backfield and can handle the PR/KR duties than trade for Cribbs...

But that's just me.

Kampman is a free agent, they can have Poppinga instead...

Even though he isn't much of an offensive threat, I say yeah, if he's available why not? We haven't had a return man who can take it to the house since Rossum.

That being said, Ted won't spend an extra dollar if he doesn't have to since he pretty much doesn't care about special teams play so I wouldn't hold my breath.

I wouldn't say that.

He did keep players especially for special teams this year and part of the reason he extended Chillar was because of his special teams play. ;)

Obviously it hasn't really worked, since our ST has been poop. :P

Cribs could be Percy Harvin with a capable QB and an offensive coordinator who knew what he was doing. I'd love to pick him up if he were available.

Cribbs would have more value to someone who was looking to add the wildcat to their arsenal. The only Packers' Super Bowl win in my lifetime was effected strongly by the return game (and Desmond Howard in particular). I think a lot of GMs regard return men as a luxury or the last piece. I just don't see TT going out to make this kind of move...

I think TT would rather use late round draft picks to get a young guy with potential rather than trade a 3rd or better for an already proven guy.

I'll tell you though, if I was a Browns fan, I'd be furious. On of the few guys on that team that had looked promising on a team that hasn't been exciting in a couple of years when Anderson was at the helm, but fell apart.

I dunno, if I was the Browns I would be looking to deal him for draft picks.

On a team that is lacking that much talent, I would trade every good player I had that was making big money for picks and then just build through the draft and through cheaper free agents... Much like the Packers have done. Then after you have built a solid young core, then go into free agency.

I don't doubt that Mike Holmgren will want to accumulate draft picks. Still, I'd be careful to disenfranchise my fans by giving up on the team's most exciting player who is still relatively young and offers you another dimension on offense. Fortunes can change quickly in the NFL. If you want more picks, just trade down a round, those trades are there to be had every single year.

I'd trade Cribbs for picks as well, assuming you get more than a 4th rounder or so. Cribbs is a great return guy but his ability as a WR or RB is questionable. If I could get a high pick or a few low picks i'd deal him because a return guy making big money doesn't make sense on one of the worst teams in the league. Holmgren should be doing everything he can to stock pile draft picks.

I would think I'd be a bit insulted by such an offer, too. Well actually, if the Browns wanted to pay me 1.4 million dollars I'd be ecstatic, but I mean if I were Cribbs. He scored 6 touchdowns for them this season, and pretty much single-handedly won them the Pittsburgh game. He can catch, run, return, and even operate as an emergency QB or run some trick passing plays.

My guess is they're concerned that suddenly his return production will stop.

I agree that not all great return guys can turn into great offensive players... Like how Cribbs was compared to Harvin.

If that was the case, Devin Hester would be a deadly offensive weapon, because the Bears have tried to use him in every way possible. Instead he is just a guy who should be returning punts and kicks that is making a ton of money.

Cribbs is a great return man, but he isn't a great offensive weapon... I certainly wouldn't pay him a ton of money.

I think they may be afraid of him turning into Devin Hester. You pay him a bunch of money and decide he needs more touches so you move him to WR/RB full time. The only problem is he ends up being an average play maker at WR/RB and he's not even producing for you on special teams any more. I'd trade him if I was Holmgren.

Edit: Newz beat me to it I guess...

He would probably take around 2-2.5 million per though, not exactly huge cash. I'd consider a trade depending on the round the pick was in.
