OT - Signing Day
Figured we could start a thread for College Football's signing day since it is Wednesday. I haven't followed UW's recruiting all that closely, but I'd be interested in knowing how their class has turned out this year. My Gophers as of right now look to have a below average class, but Brewster has gotten a surprise last second commit every year so far...and of course there is the BIG GUY that could really elevate their class (and potentially team).

Re: OT - Signing Day
I boosted my "every few months" visit to every few weeks in light of the Henderson and Royce White issues at GopherHole. Just to see what is up and sometimes (sorry) to bask in their struggles. Nice to see you came over here with a few hot topics on the board today
Just kidding.
Anyways, the Wisconsin class is decent, looks like a lot of guys that Rivals dropped a star to give to a Florida recruit, etc. There isn't the "big name" guy like Oglesby or Clay or Toon coming in state. Or a Phillips out of state. The biggest recruit I've seen is White, the RB who was touted but only 3 stars.
Something is screwy with the Rivals ranking of Wisconsin because they are like 86th in the 2010 rankings and if you look at the teams and their numbers around Wisconsin in those ratings you'll realize something got messed up in the calculations.
This Mason guy from Madison East also looks like he will continue the lineage of great TEs at Wisconsin as well.

Re: OT - Signing Day
Yeah I know I didn't really post much to start this thread, but my main purpose was to get some info on Wisconsin's class, since I haven't really followed their recruiting news. I did notice their ranking in the 80s (@ Rivals) which really jumped out at me, especially since their star average is about the same as Minnesota's (if not better?) and Minnesota is in the 40s.
It will be interesting to see how the Minnesota/Wisconsin kids that went to the rival school will do over the next 4 years. Wisconsin got one of our best DL in Beau Allen (parents are UW Alums). Minnesota got some top Wisconsin guys (though BB didn't recruit them) QB Tom Parish, OL Matt Eggen, and DL Zac Epping.
I'm also going to follow Jake Irwin closely because he went to the same high school as me and played for basically the same coaching staff I played for. He's the first player from Waunakee (that I'm aware of) to get a full ride to Wisconsin, despite our football program being one of the best in the state.
It has actually been kind of a crazy day for Minnesota recruiting, with 4* WR James Louis putting up a status on facebook stating he was going to switch his commit to Minnesota from tOSU. Which led to crazy speculation that Seantrel had already decided on Minnesota and has started recruiting players to switch to Minnesota with him.
I have a feeling neither will sign with Minnesota.

Did you play?
What are your thoughts on the Waunakee coach? I played for perennial "lose by 2 in the final seconds to the eventual champion" Cedarburg.
Anyways, two years ago I think it was I was in the Madison area so checked out Waunakee throttle us in the playoffs. There were some grumblings from the fans that the coach is a big fan of running it up. Could have been sour grapes though, since I had nothing to do with the happenings I have no idea.

Parish is a top Wisconsin guy? He needs a lot of work.

Yeah I played, I wasn't anything special though. I always focused more on basketball. I think Coach Rice is an awesome coach. He'll be a college coach eventually. We never ran the score up intentionally, but that's not to say we weren't up 30 or 40 by half. When that happened we'd play the 2nd and 3rd stringers in the 2nd half and sometimes they were better than the other teams starters. The 3 years I suited (suited as a sophmore because all the JV starters did in the playoffs) we won state, lost state, and lost in the semi's.

Yeah Parish is one of Wisconsin's top 3 recruits, Epping and Eggen are in the 8-10 range. Parish may or may not play QB for Minnesota, he's a pretty good athlete I guess.

Yeah I mean it was normally the same for us but I think Waunakee was throwing the ball deep when up 20 with like 4 minutes left, though, I could be wrong, I was just curious.

I guess they could have been running up the score, I haven't watched many games since I graduated because I'm usually away at school.

Yeah I saw that, I wasn't expecting him to sign with Minnesota. It seemed like he was just trying to build some suspense and get some extra attention.

Looks like all of Minnesota's commits have signed, just have to wait till 4:30 central to see what Henderson does.
Has Wisconsin gotten an surprise commits today? Didn't they get Appleton at the last second last year?

I don't know if you read this entire thread but I started it in hopes of finding out more about Wisconsin's class. Today I responded to a comment saying James Louis signed with tOSU. Sorry if that bothered you.

Re: OT - Signing Day
Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Considering Wisconsin's offensive line is already one of if not the biggest in college football he would fit right in even though he would be the biggest.

Two years ago the Badgers had the biggest line in football period, no NFL team could match their size. With that being said size isn't everything, as evident as how our line plays at times the last few years

Re: OT - Signing Day
Size isn't everything but you also can't coach size. I think just the fact that he is a preferred walk on rather than a scholarship player says he is a project at this point. Still kind of scary to think about an 18 year old kid being that big.

Re: OT - Signing Day
At what point is an offensive lineman too tall? I guess it depends on how tall your QB is, but it seems like you wouldn't want an entire o-line of 6'10 guys. I think there are a few starting tackles in the NFL that are in the 6'9 range. Didn't the Packers try out a guy that was 6'10 or 6'11 when they were looking for o-line help? I think it was a couple of weeks before Tauscher signed.

Re: OT - Signing Day
I think the too tall thing is overrated. Just look at Drew Brees for proof. He is 5'11" and has no problem seeing over his line, another 3-4 inches on them wouldn't make a difference since they all probably have 4-6 inches on him at this point.
