Team Leader

Post#1 » by Mr. E » Fri Jul 31, 2009 2:55 am

Who is the "leader" of the Texans?

On most teams it is just expected to be the Quarterback. In places like New England & Indianapolis that is very true. In other places like Baltimore it could be seen as Ray Lewis or Ed Reed. Up until last year it would be hard to convince anyone that the leader in San Diego was not LT.

So who is the "Leader" of our boys down on Kirby?

Matt Shaub - is it his team?

Andre Johnson - the silent leader a la Jeff Bagwell?

Dunta Robinson - His heart was never in question, and he can rally the troops like no other

Mario Williams - He may not be the leader, but my god aren't you happy we have him and not VY or Bush? :)

Honestly, I'm leaning towards DeMeco Ryans. He wasn't given anything - he took an opportunity and made the most of it. With all of the attention paid to Dunta's situation this one bothers me so much more because I really do think that he's the leader of the defense at the least, and possibly the team.

Shaub has it in him to step forward as "the guy," and maybe I'm not giving him enough credit already, but for now I'm saying it's DeMeco.

I will concur with DeMeco being the "leader", although I really hate the idea of any team having only one leader. Ideally it would be Schaub/Andre on offense(as long as Andre keeps being Andre and not changing his name to a number or an abbreviation), on defense it would be Mario/DeMeco.

What troubles me the most is this:

Middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans and tight end Owen Daniels are unhappy campers.

Ryans and Daniels were hoping to sign new contracts with the Texans, but their agents were unable to negotiate deals.

Unlike cornerback Dunta Robinson, who was designated as the franchise player, Ryans and Daniels reported to training camp. Because they are under contract, they would have been fined. Robinson can’t be fined because he’s not under contract.

“It’s a bad message when you look at it because you have top guys on the team not getting deals,” Ryans said. “If they want to reward me, they’ll reward me. If not, there are other teams out there that’ll like to. I can’t make them give me the deal.”

Of course I have the utmost confidence in our management to resolve any issues properly, but it would be nice to have all of these contract issues dealt with before we head into the season. All of these guys are key players and it has to be a distraction.
We watched the tragedy unfold. We did as we were told, we bought and sold. It was the greatest show on Earth...but then it was over.

They've got to take care of DeMeco. I really hope that they don't drag their feet on this any further.

Rick Smith said they would start DeMeco's contract as soon as the season ended. I don't think they expected Dunta to turn down a huge deal.

DeMeco and Schaub are the leaders.
