What is the most important position to focus on in the draft

Post#1 » by Sports Arsenal » Thu Mar 19, 2009 2:14 am

As we count down the days to the April 25th NFL Draft, what do you think this team should be the most concerned about going into the draft?

Defense, Defense, Defense. We have got to get better at rushing the passer and forcing mistakes, and we need more depth in the secondary(I'm glad we have Dunta coming back even if it was under somewhat controversial circumstances). Picking up Smith is great, hopefully he can be the guy to play opposite Mario, but that's not enough. I hope they focus primarily on the defensive side of the ball. I feel pretty confident in our offense as is, although I'd love to see us get another solid RB to compliment Slaton(is Brown that guy?).

I can't wait for the draft!

I feel like defense is definitely where we need to look first. Our offense was #3 in the NFL last year, so tinkering with it isn't the best of ideas. However I do feel another running back to compliment Slaton would be a strong selection. I would like to get another big name WR, like Harrison,Holt, one of those guys would be great...

I definitely don't think we take a RB at #15, but I'm sure we can find a good one in the later rounds, and if history is any guide with Kubiak and crew, we should be able to do that. We have Chris Brown who was hurt last season but I think he was pretty decent for the Titans in 2007(4.5 YPC, 5 TD's, 500 yards in a limited role), but I don't really know how healthy he is and I haven't seen him play enough to feel confident in him.

Another solid WR would be nice, but I think that's definitely not a priority ahead of the defense and a good backup RB. Maybe some more depth for the O-Line.

We have 7 picks this year, the 15th overall, 14th in the 2nd round, 13th, 12th, 16th, 15th, and 14th in the following rounds. I'm confident they will have a strong draft.

I think our resident expert Vator needs to weigh in ;)

The Texans most pressing needs coming into the offseason were a pass-rushing DE, to help take some pressure off of Super Mario, and a pass-rushing LB to compliment Demeco. The early signing of Antonio Smith took care of our problem of not having a solid starter opposite of Mario. Because of that I have to assume that LB is the priority.

Some mock drafts have had the CB, Malcolm Jenkins, fall into our laps at #15. Personally, I think that he'll be gone long before we draft. The current man-crush of lots of Texans experts is the nephew of Assistant Coach, Bruce Matthews - Clay - who played at USC. Some will say that his teammate, Brian Cushing is the better option, but I've become a kool-aid drinker for the potential that is Clay Matthews. I think that he would be an immediate starter, and that he would only improve. That said, I won't be crying if they don't take him. In fact - if they are that in love with him then I hope that they can trade down a couple spots and still get him.

The only two DE's that I'd consider (considering our talent at that position) are Brian Orakpo of Texas, and Everett Brown of Florida State. Both will be long gone by the time that we draft, and that's all the better so that we don't have to court temptation.

Unlike some fans, i would have no problem with the Texans addressing the D-line again if the right pick is there. I still hold out hope for young Amobi Okoye to develop this year, but I'm not comfortable with the slot currently occupied by Travis Johnson, Frank Okam and others.

It is the point of silliness to discuss taking an offensive player with our first pick...or the second or third, for that matter. Beanie Wells will not be a Texan. Mark Sanchez will not be a Texan. I will be surprised if the Texans take a WR in this draft in any round before the 6th.

One of these four players will be a Texan after the first round: Clay Matthews, Jr; Brian Cushing; Peria Jerry or Aaron Maybin.
