ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Oakland Raiders running back Dominic Rhodes was suspended Tuesday for the first four games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
Rhodes
The league does not disclose reasons for substance abuse suspensions, but Rhodes pleaded guilty in the offseason to reckless driving charges in Indiana after prosecutors agreed to drop drunken driving charges against him.
Rhodes, who spent his six years in Indianapolis, signed a two-year contract in the offseason with the Raiders that could be worth up to $7.5 million. He is expected to split time with last year's starter LaMont Jordan as the Raiders try to improve a running game that averaged 3.9 yards per carry in 2006.
Because of the suspension, Rhodes will forfeit $352,941 of his scheduled $1.5 million base salary for 2007.
I like Dominic, but he has to hold himself to a higher standard off the field and do more productive things with his time. If he hadn't been in that DUI situation earlier in the offseason, he would've had a better chance of remaining as a Colt. This is a distraction I'm glad the Colts have steered clear from right now.

It is a good thing the Colts got rid of Rhodes. While I really like him as a player, his behavior off the field is unacceptable if you want to play for the Colts.

So did they suspend him for the DUI that happened when Rhodes was still a Colts?

No, that's totally different from the substance abuse issue. However, he probably did have some substance abuse violation while with the Colts because it's the second offense that results in a 4 game suspension. Unfortunately, the league doesn't disclose much information about what and when the violations were by the players, they only tell the public the player's sentence after repeat offenses.

Not to sound too callous, but it looks like we sold the stock right before the bubble burst.
DRhodes earned my respect when he subbed for Edge that season and became the first undrafted FA to gain 1000 yards in a season, and further impressed me w/ his professionalim in the playoffs when we started Addai. I do feel he kinda got shafted for the SB MVP, but then again, it's easy to run for 100 yards when the safeties are playing 25 yards off the ball, and backpedaling at the snap.
I hope he gets his $#!T together and doesn't fall into the typical problems w/ which the Raiders' players are usually associated.
