San Francisco - Broncos defensive tackle Gerard Warren did not make the trip to San Francisco on Sunday as the team attempts to trade him.
Two NFL sources confirmed Warren, who started the past two seasons for the Broncos, is on the trading block. The Broncos would pick up part of his salary, which was trimmed during the offseason. Warren, who had 51 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks last season, became expendable because he is not considered a good fit for Jim Bates' system where tackles are to primarily leverage their position and hold the point. Warren is a tackle who can penetrate the backfield.
Should Warren be traded, Jimmy Kennedy would start alongside Sam Adams at defensive tackle. Veteran Alvin McKinley and rookie Marcus Thomas would also move up the depth chart.
Warren has been bothered by a turf toe injury that hindered him last season. However, sources confirmed health was not the reason he did not make the trip.
He likely will be traded within the week for a future draft pick.
Miami and Indianapolis are among the teams who are in need of a proven defensive tackle.
Height: 6-4
Weight: 325
Born: 07/25/1978
College: Florida
NFL Experience: 7
He fits the Cover 2 system and played solid when healthy for the Broncos. I'd offer a fifth round pick, but may go with a fourth round pick if push came to shove. The former 3rd overall pick has some talent and size.

I agree. I posted an idea for a 5th or 6th in the "Booger out for a year" thread. I wouldn't expect Warren to be a savior, but he would definitely solidify a position on this team that has many new and unproved faces.

I want either Gerald Warren or Warren Sapp. Would prefer Sapp.

Sapp would be great, but my only prob w/ him is the price. We know GW is gonna come on the cheap. WSapp may still want a tad too much... and he knows we need him!

Well, first things first, he's still an Oakland Raider as of now.

Well, now that Gerard Warren is a Raider, does that mean that Sapp is a goner?

^And, if Sapp is a goner in Oaktown, does that means he's this year's Booger in Naptown???

I think Ed Johnson is showing enough that the Colts might not want to hasten the inevitable tearing apart of this roster by clogging the roster unnecessarily with another contract that will just have to be cut and add dead money to the cap (a la Corey Simon).

IDK if Sapp would ask for Corey Simon years and/or money, and I definitely know Polian wouldn't give it to him (see Simon reference)... Sapp would be a one-, maybe, and I mean maybe, two-year stop-gap to help out our youth. Sapp would be happy to play for Dungy and go after a title, especially after what he went from in Tampa to Oakland.
Plus, Sapp is much older than Simon was when we signed him, so I wouldn't expect Polian to offer that much as far as contract length or finance.
