How'd you rate their handling of the QB situation?

I'm a Longtime fan, thrilled to find a Jags forum here at RealGM. I thought I'd start a poll/topic to discuss the whole QB issue.

I was initially quite taken aback, but after thinking about it I think they did the almost thing possible with Byron Leftwich.

We all know he's not an ideal QB, but I suspect most of us were fans because we believed he'd put it together or perhapses because we liked his back story and the idea of throwing the long ball....

After thinking about it a bit I figure the Jags tried to make the most of their assets by supporting him and hoping he'd get it together in this contract year. Apparently he dragged his ass during camp and despite all Byrons prior bravado I believe the franchise/coach on this one (see quote below). I watched the Green Bay game and I'd agree that Byron looked terrible in that one... this article mentions that and it explains this position:

one club source said, they thought that he was lackadaisical and placed little importance in how he practiced or played this summer once coach Del Rio named him the starting quarterback in the offseason. Particularly disturbing was his play in an exhibition game at Green Bay two weeks ago, the source said. For the summer, Leftwich completed 19 of 38 passes for 226 yards and a touchdown in three preseason games. He misfired on several passes, badly overthrew Dennis Northcutt on two deep routes against Green Bay, and continued to show sloppy mechanics with his feet and throwing motion..

I suppose we'll get to see if Garrard can in fact learn a few new tricks to make that transition from skilled but arguably predictable back-up to quality starter.

What do you think?

I think they could have done a better job of handling the situation, I mean they say he is going to be their man and then turn around and cut him. I, myself, preferred Leftwich to David but I will support either one. I am hoping that maybe David will play better without the pressure of havng to look over his shoulder constantly.

Yeah. The timing was a little messed up. Garrard has been a Jag for what 3 years now? He knows the system. Weve had Garrard and Gray in the system for awhile, its not like we are throwing 2 new guys into the mix, like Oakland is doing.

David is mobile, something Leftwich really couldnt do..so hell make something out of nothing at times. Now only if our WR's will catch what he throws more consistently, then i smell 10 wins
