Ted GinnTraded to SF

Post#1 » by GameTime_3 » Fri Apr 16, 2010 5:35 pm

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that Ginn has been traded to the 49ers for a 2010 late-round draft pick. It's a fairly dramatic plunge for a guy who was the ninth overall pick in the 2007 draf

Fine by me. We can get someone else to return kicks and punts with the pick we get from San Fran.

I don't understand it. I'd rather keep Ginn and see if he could have had a break out season with Marshall next to him rather then get a 5th round pick.

Thats true... I had the same thoughts but I just don't see it. I think if Ginn was destined to be good he would have done it without Marshall here.

I'm pretty sure this trade was done for 2 reasons.

Cost cutting Ginns contract out [although not much]to offset that off Marshall's
and
Give Ginn a Fresh start elsewhere. Ginn will prob have a breakout year across from Crabtree and V.Davis

I would of rather of waited to see if he could explode being our deep threat to Marshall's roles. but oh well

Ginn is the anti Parcells player. A puss who shied away from contact and had a low football IQ. No thanks. He also was much maligned among the fan base (not his fault).

I was cautiously optimistic when we first drafted him and I still say, good riddance.

As far as sports fans go, I'm a pretty laid back guy. I love football passionately, but I also understand that it's just a game and that life always goes on...nevertheless, it was amazing how much unbridled resentment Ginn would evoke from me. I didn't even know the guy and I hated his guts. His mere existence was a constant reminder that we could've drafted anyone else. I'm sure my hostility bordered on irrational, yet it felt so genuine, so justified. He just never ceased to disappoint.

I just couldn't believe that we took him when we did in the draft. I thought Brady Quinn would be the guy and was pissed that we didn't get him. It's proven to be fine now missing out on him though. Ginn was just so damn fast I thought maybe we had a star in the making but what a wimp he turned out to be.

Well said sir. You captured what I felt when he was drafted. I said to myself when he was drafted, "Randy and Cam are going to look like geniuses or incompetant fools."

It was an awful pick in my opinion. We had so many other important needs to fill. On top of that there was also a lot better talent still available. Patrick Willis! Darrelle Revis! Stupid move never to be forgotten as long as i'm a fan. What hurt even more was that we turned right around in the second round and drafted John Beck when Sidney Rice, Lamar Woodley, and Steve Smith were still there. I wanted any QB but Beck...Thought Troy Edwards, and Troy Smith were better options.
Round three didn't hurt as bad, but it was still a crappy move to draft Booker when Mike Sim-Walker could have been taken instead.

ted ginn's done about as much as a wr/retun man as brady quin has as a qb...

the pick was bad but not as bad as people tend to make it out to be..the nfl draft is a crap shoot for skill players.

ginns miami career is underrated.

This. I've said this all along: Ginn is not a number 1 WR, that we were putting him out there to be. Expecting that from him just means that we were expecting too much/the wrong things out of him. I'd rather have kept Ted than receive a 5th round pick, and see what he can do next year with legit options around him, but what are you gonna do?

I dunno, I think the argument could be made that it was the worst 1st round draft pick in franchise history. I'm quantifying "worst" by the following criteria:

Value -- there are only going to be so many kickoffs per game, so it doesn't seem to make much sense spending the 9th overall pick on a KR specialist. Even if Ginn were capable of handling PR, which he wasn't, it still wouldn't be much of an investment.

Who Was Drafted After Him -- hindsight of course is 20/20, but there were six Pro Bowlers selected in the 1st round after Ginn.

Production -- the stats are meager. Precious little YAC, Recs, and TDs. And it's not like this was a crowded offense...it begged for someone to step up and stand out.

Public Relations -- I'm sure apathy and indifference would've been preferable to Ginn because we were strongly and openly hostile towards him. It was a mean-spirited, antagonistic relationship, and not entirely undeserved. Every once and a while I'll watch that YouTube video of our draft party's reaction after Goodell announces the pick. It's hilarious watching the look of sheer disbelief (and maybe even a little bit of dementia?) on that old lady's face.

When weighing those guidelines, I think the only other player that could compare is Sammie Smith. We screwed up the '07 first round bad, nearly to unprecedented levels.

No, the pick was absolutely terrible. They could have moved down 10-12 picks in the draft to take him plus picked up other draft picks.

I don't think any of us knew Brady Quinn would struggle the way he has at the time. Don't act you all knew Quinn would struggle. In fact many of us ranted over us not taking Quinn. Want me to dig it up on this site?

No need. I almost chucked my remote through my TV when I heard Ginn was being picked rather than Quinn. And that is no insult to Ginn. I've been a supporter of his, and wish him the best in SF.

I love how people are so quick to point out Quinn's struggles his first couple of years in the NFL. Yet at the time every fan in Miami was already putting Quinn jersey's on order once they saw he was still available as we were picking. I thought it was a lock myself.
As for Quinn thus far... Well there is another player that had a rough go of things his first three years in the NFL as well... His name is Drew Brees...I think Quinn can follow in those footsteps.
I'm getting off topic here... Back to Ginn... Glad he's gone because he frustrated me week in and week out while he was here.
