minicamp tidbits

afternoon sessions:
John Beck looks shorter than his 6-2 listed height, especially when he's being swallowed up by the defense durinig 9-on-9 drills. He's playing with the third-teamers, but the defense is light years ahead of the revamped offense at this point. Beck seemed rushed all day, but he did display a rocket arm, particularly on a slant to Derek Hagan and a deep toss to rookie receiver David Sutton - who torched CB Jason Allen.

What a shock, receiver Kelly Campbell is limping again after going down in the afternoon session. Campbell has never met a limp he didn't like.

Sadly, one of the good guys, cornerback Andre' Goodman left the field in pain, in what could be a reoccurrence of his shoulder injury that ended his season last year. Hopefully not.

For the first time ever, the practice sessions are being announced by radio personality Kenny Walker. He's basically explaining to the sweltering fans what drills the players are undertaking. It's actually pretty neat and a positive change. Also, the players now have their names on their backs, which will help us hacks ID practice squad players and workout players. ...

The rookie punter Brandon Fields is 6-5, 236 pounds and looks more like a defensive end but he does boom them. ...

Tight end David Martin, hoping to make fans forget the slippery-fingered Randy McMichael, sat out with a flu bug.

who is on the 3rd string offensive line? I think Dave Wannstedt is the 3rd string right tackle. Glad to see them saying Beck displays a "rocket arm" when the haters said he had no arm.

morning session
Rookie QB John Beck has a powerful arm, but he had trouble with the speed of the defense as did all the quarterbacks. He let the clock run out twice. He said it was tough digesting all the plays and at times he was not reading the defense correctly.

Scary thought: The three healthy quarterbacks, Beck, Cleo Lemon and Gibran Hamdan have started one NFL game between them. Ouch.

Tight end David Martin has a touch of the flu and didn't practice in the morning. As expected, DT Keith Traylor (ankle), OL Anthony Alabi (knee) and QB Daunte Culpepper (knee) spent most of the practice on the stationary bicycle, as did rookie receiver Ted Ginn (foot).

Culpepper did jog a lot and said afterwards he expects to be 100 percent by the next minicamp in June. Whether he's still here or not may hinge on the Trent Green situation. ...

Ginn said having a boot placed on his sprained left foot is a possibility but he's not sure yet. Count on it. Because Ginn's class at Ohio State doesn't graduate until the second week of June, he won't be able to participate in the next minicamp (June 8-10) even if he was healthy enough. ...

Running back Ronnie Brown admitted he was overweight (about eight pounds) and needs to cut his body fat percentage from 12 to 8 or 9 pct. ...

The Samoan contingent were beseiged by reporters, mostly who wanted to talk about FB Reagan Mauia's U-Tube video of him breaking through a dry wall and screaming. He said they were re-doing the workout facility and they were all doing stuff to knock down the wall. Tala Esera, the leader of the group, put his head through it. I've got a headache just thinking about it.

The Dolphins probably lead the NFL in Mormons and that's not including c/g Drew Mormino. At least two of the Samoan rookies are Mormons - Samson Satele and Reagan Mauia - as well as Beck.

afternoon practice
May 4, 2007
Friday afternoon practice
Everybody is accounted for except TE David Martin, who is excused while he battles a nasty bug he got on Thursday night

DT Keith Traylor, OT Anthony Alabi and WR Ted Ginn are riding the bikes. QB Daunte Culpepper is sprinting towards the bikes after stretching.

Before stretching,

the punters got a chance to show their leg. Was impressed with Brandon Fields, the seventh-round pick. Those returning punts: Lorenzo Booker, Kelly Campbell, Derek Hagan, Chris Chambers, Az Hakim. Ginn was watching to the side with special teams coach Keith Armstrong in his ear.

The Dolphins have added last names to their practice jerseys. And Kenny Walker, the radio personality, is announcing practice. He tells fans

Interesting words about Beck, I figure at this point its too hard to tell very much though. The comments about his height are a bit disconcerting, but I'm not sure it'll be a huge deal.

At this point I'm still  for Culpepper, who seems like he's well on his way to recovery.

btw, worth mentioning that i've seen it reported multiple places that they're working joe toledo at RT (presumably to challenge Shelton at the spot), which would explain the interest in the Jets RG whose name escapes me right now.

If i remember correctly, BYU's offense line played with a lot of spacing between each other. Beck might've gotten use to looking through the spacig and seeing he different lanes. He's gonna have to adjust to a packed Oline with taller players, maybe move out of the pocket a little.
