Boy if this happens you can really say goodbye to any thoughts of Chris Long or Vernon Gholston with the #1 pick. Looks more and more like the Phins will be taking Jake Long.

I think Joey porters days are numberd. I think pace is a stud and he fits the 3-4 perfect.

Or:

Pace-Crowder-Long-Porter.

You can't run on that.

if chris long is playing inside i probably want him to shed a little weight for speed in order to keep his coverage skills up

I just don't think he has the speed to cover as much as he would have to on the inside

According to a league source, the Dolphins have agreed to terms with free agent defensive end Calvin Pace.

The fifth-year pro is coming off his best season after recording 98 tackles, including 6 1/2 sacks. The financial terms haven't been disclosed but is believed to include over $20 million in guaranteed money.

Pace's signing leaves Joey Porter's status with the team in limbo after being the team's marquee signing a season ago.

If they cut Porter, wouldn't that accelerate the cap number to what his signing bonus is? I'm not sure they could trade him, even for a low pick.

Re: General Board

Pace Signing Not Official Yet?

Free agent OLB Calvin Pace says he "loved" his Friday visit with the Dolphins, but still plans to meet with the Jets this weekend.

"I'm feeling it," he said of Miami. "You know Parcells, he's going to win wherever he goes. We'll see man. I might be lining up on the other side of Jason Taylor. I just feel like I should still take that trip (to New York)."

Cmon guys lets get real here. I know there is some real deep infatuation with Chris Long and Vernon Gholston but if Calvin Pace signs for 20 Mil plus guaranteed then we need to start looking elsewhere in the draft. We will be loaded at the 3-4 OLB position even with a trade of Jason Taylor. Another thing is Chris Long will not be a 3-4 DE either as he is vastly undersized for that in the pros. Bill just signed a guy in Randy Starks who played 3-4 end for Maryland who is freakin 6'3 312 pounds.

OLB Calvin Pace
OLB Joey Porter
OLB Reggie Torbor
OLB Matt Roth
OLB Abraham Wright
OLB Jason Taylor (Possible trade bait)

And please stop with the talk of Long playing ILB or Pace playing ILB. You dont pay all this money to have these guys play ILB. You pay them to get to the QB. Releasing Porter seems like a stretch after giving him 20 million in guarantees. I dont think Huizenga wants to admit just yet that he just wasted all that money. Torbor was an undersized DE at Auburn so he may be a nice role player off the bench. The guy too look out for is Matt Roth. At 6'3 270 and experience playing both LB and DE in college is a natural fit at the 3-4. Let alone a nice project player in Wright. The pick is going to come down too QB Matt Ryan or OT Jake Long. I dont think anybody is going to trade up. But if Atlanta is dead set on Ryan then we have them by the ballz now because Chris Long is no longer a lock to us. If we can squeeze them then the draft will fall like this

1. Atlanta- QB Matt Ryan

2. St. Louis- DE Chris Long

3. Miami - OT Jake Long

or

1. Miami- OT Jake Long or QB Matt Ryan

2. St.Louis- DE Chris Long

3. Atlanta- QB Matt Ryan or OT Jake Long

I'm assuming Pace has yet to make a decision b/w us and NY....

I think Jake is more likely than ever, but I wouldn't superglue the nameplates of Roth, Abe Wright or Porter to their lockers just yet. Also, Huizenga doesnt have say in the Porter thing, I am sure Parcells has carte blanche. Now, it might be that cutting him screws the cap up too much so they keep him.

The New York Jets have agreed to a six-year, $42 million deal with DE/LB Calvin Pace.

Pace, a five-year Arizona Cardinals veteran. began his career as a defensive end before moving to linebacker in a 3-4 front in 2007.

Pace will receive a $20 million signing bonus, with $22 million of the deal guaranteed.

He chose between offers from the Dolphins and Jets.

Back to looking at Chris Long then.

There were a lot of question marks to guarantee him $22 millions, especially with Porter and JT on the books already. He was a good player last season and could be a steal for the Jets. At the end it came down to guaranteed money and the Jets are spending BIG dollars season.

As for Chris Long, I think he was on our plans with or without Pace on the roster.

The Jets overpaid for him, which I guess they had to do because of the amount of pressure they have to win this coming season, or there will be a huge housecleaning. For that amount of money, I am glad Miami passed and can use that money to acquire other assets.

Matt Roth is no 3-4 OLB He actually played 3-4 DE for us last year and the year before. He has beefed up to 285 I think.

Thank god we didnt over pay for Pace. And yes Chris Long will be welcomed with open arms now that Pace is on the Jets. Defintely makes a ton of sense now for us to purse Chris.
