I'm glad, I think he's going to be huge this year barring injury

The Dolphins have signed Ricky Williams to a one-year contract extension that will keep him in the Miami backfield through 2009, a source close to the veteran running back said.

The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told ESPN's Chris Mortensen on Saturday that there was no signing bonus, but Williams' salary in 2009 could increase significantly over this year's base of $730,000.

The Miami tailback can increase his 2008 compensation with easily achievable incentives, the source said. Williams, 31, was scheduled to be a free agent in '09.

Dolphins officials had no comment on Williams' new pact.

Williams, the 2002 NFL rushing champion, has played in only 13 games since retiring in the summer of 2004. He has tested positive for marijuana at least four times since the Dolphins acquired him in 2002, and their franchise-record playoff drought began that same year.

In July, the 1998 Heisman Trophy winner said he felt good going into the Dolphins' season.

The Dolphins, coming off an embarrassing 1-15 season, are banking that he does.

Williams returned last year, but his comeback lasted less than one half. He gained only 15 yards on six carries before he fumbled, was stepped on and tore his chest muscle against Pittsburgh. Teamed with Ronnie Brown, who was on pace for a career season in 2007 before he tore a ligament in his right knee, Miami's running backs have lofty expectations.

Run Ricky, run. I have a gut feeling he is going to have an amazing season. It's going to be a fun football year for sure. Woot!

We have crap loads of cap space, why not give incentives to the few players who deserve it. I like it. The NFL is turning out to be a "Two RB" league like back in the 70's. The single feature back is hardly in existence anymore.

It's hard to have a good year in the backfield when you have no O-Line and no passing game to speak of, not to mention you're past your prime and the porous defence will lose the TOP battle.

are you talking about the Dolphins? I guess you haven't seen, read, heard, viewed, anything about them this offseason

that's cool

The funny that is about that post is the year Ricky Williams dominated and had that amazing and his best statistical season back in 2002, it was behind an offensive line, that the VERY NEXT YEAR all of them were out of the league.

So with an improved line, you're not gonna see vintage Ricky, but he's gonna be good IMO.

BTW ESPN is reporting he will start week 1.

Well, Ricky needs more then 10 carries. Tony needs to pound the ball. On the 2 yard line, we went with 2 stright pass and no running plays.

Where is Wilford? 6 million dollars for a bench player?
