what a win.
favre, harvin and greg lewis really paid off in this one. it was a lucky win, but not undeserving. we completely dominated the first half (yards as well as time of possession), but instead of being up two scores, we were behind one. this was hard to swallow.
in the first half, SF blitzed in about 2/3 of all our plays...and favre made the good throws..especially on third down. so they stopped doing that in the second half.
the second half was about equal. vernon davis is really a monster...and we had more trouble on offense then, and could only win by a once-in-a-year play. some thoughts:
- berrian had 4 drops, 2 of them very easy ones. had he made those catches, he would have had well over 100 yards, and the game would have been over at half-time. he better gets things going. it seems like he does not like favres throws for some reason.
- defensive line was a bit improved. i'm still not satisfied with them (given, i have very high expecations from them)
- our linebackers were solid...but we were lucky frank gore was out...he would have punished us more through some holes that coffee just couldn't.
- our secondary played a good game. there's only so much you can do about a freak like vernon davis
- our o-line was under attack the whole first half, facing blitzes almost all the time. loadhoalt had his first good game, and they were better than the last two games, despite the tremendous pressure by SF. running the ball is still not where it was last year.
- outside of berrian, i was happy with the recievers. solid play there...and the harvin hype continues...it seems he can break it, whenever he has the ball.
- did you see harvin's speed on that kick return (even though he almost stumbled 2 times)? he sure is faster than peterson. WOW. just WOW.
it was the expected hard match. SF is for real. we still have a lot of room for improvement. coaching is still the usual same-old thing. this won't be enough if the real big teams (packers, ravens, steelers) will show up. turn it up a notch.
it's good to be 3-0.
(btw: chicago lucked out once again, profiting again from 2 missed easy field goals...just as last week against the steelers...they're much worse than their 2-1 record might indicate. However, i think the packers are legit. it'll be a great game next monday (and i think we have to attack rodgers on every down!)
