I'd like some more speed on the outside, but the Penn State guys intrigue me behind the new starting DTs

so chris cook signed a one year deal with the 49ers
melton has left to visit other teams
greenway restructured his deal (sanford and felton did too)
charlie johnson and jerome simpson resigned as well

so we have about 16 million left under the cap after signing cox (but not counting simpson or johnson's contracts)

Supposedly they're still talking to Melton. And there are still some good DBs unsigned.

i'm torn between getting a proven pro-bowl DT and wanting to see Floyd start

Looks like Melton is definitely still a possibility. Dallas would have trouble fitting him under the cap and I saw that Seattle is not so much in the running.

I do wonder if it says anything about Floyd that they are going after Melton, especially when we have other positions we could upgrade.

It seems like even if Floyd wasn't "starting," they could have a rotation at DT (like Griffen at DE last season) where he gets a healthy number of snaps, especially with Melton coming off injury.

Corey Wootton signed to a 1 year 1.5 million deal. He will provide nice needed depth.

signed vlad ducasse (guard from the jets) to a one year deal

so we have a fair amount of depth at guard now

apparently we had about $12 million in cap space before this deal

Why would the Bears make that deal? They need another old player on their defense? Why didnt they just resign Melton?

injury concerns maybe? I wouldn't know otherwise, he has shown he can be a great player. I wish him the best in Chicago but hopefully he has off games against us :P

overall I think rick and co. have done a good/very good job in free agency this offseason. they've resigned everyone they should have and at reasonable contracts too, they've brought in youth to the defense with lots of upside and shored the young D line up for years to come. I was kind of hoping they would have gotten a CB to go opposite Rhodes but bringing the captain is great considering how bad we were guarding the slot last year. other than that they brought in depth at the necessary positions, which is never a bad thing.

they also set themselves up so they can pretty much go BPA during the draft, which is the ideal way to enter it (imo)

how would you guys grade their free agency period?

I think the Vikes did a pretty good job in FA, I was hoping they'd get Joseph before FA started, and was surprised that they actually got him, he can be the next Pat Williams and possibly better. Munnerlyn isnt quite as good as Verner, but he fits in better than Verner would have, we needed a slot corner and Munnerlyn will help. I think they did as much as they could, they werent going to be able to fill every position. We went from having an old worn out defense to one of the younger defenses in the league, all with tons of potential.

If Manziel or Bridgewater are there at #8, I think we have to take them.

yeah I'm psyched about joseph and was really hoping we could get melton, especially for the contract that he signed with dallas. other than not getting melton I think they did a good job. griffen and Robison at the ends with joseph and Floyd should be a good core on the D line, hopefully Floyd develops well.

i'm really hoping that the combination of zimmer along with the potential of a young defense can have a somewhat average year defensively. I really hope they bring in some good young defenders in the draft. in fact, if the Vikings can't get teddy or manziel with the 8th pick I would hope they either draft a defensive player if the value is there or trade back to get more picks and then roll with mettenberger or savage, maybe even carr if he falls (which isn't looking likely at this point).

We did OK, but I would have liked one more impact player.

Theres always something more to be desired after FA is over. I'm just glad that we didnt get desperate and overpay for people that we wanted like some teams do every year. I'm sure there were more players the Vikings wanted but the price wasnt right.
