2020 off-season news thread

Post#1 » by hermes » Sun Jan 12, 2020 3:26 pm

alright, let's just move on - the sun will come out next year right?

2019 season discussion
so, the vikings had a good year - won ten games, made the playoffs and won a game
but they left a lot on the table, some divisional loses that really killed playoff seeding

middle portion of the season looked like the offense had finally figured it out and was running at the kind of effeciency we've been wanting for a while. but too many other times it wasn't working and when it wasn't working it was really ugly

the defense seemed to take a step back this year. still a really good unit but maybe not near the top of the league anymore. a lot of the decline seemed to be with the cornerbacks where wholesale change might be needed.

draft
i think we have the 25th pick for the draft
currently have 7 draft picks, two 7th rounders and no fifth round pick (traded away for that ravens kicker :noway: ), the rest appear to be the 25th slot in each of the remaining rounds.

free agency
probably will be a lot of action here
we're already over the cap by almost $5m
could be the end of the defense largely retaining the same parts for the last 5ish years
free agents:
everson griffen (team option)
trae waynes
anthony harris
rashod hill
andrew sendejo
mackensie alexander
dan bailey
britton colquitt
sean mannion
dakota dozier
ameer abdullah
brett jones
laquon treadwell
cj ham (restricted)
kentrell brothers
david morgan
jayron kearse
stephen weatherly
eric wilson (restricted)
marcus sherels

now you can be gm! https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/tools/roster/minnesota-vikings/

2020 schedule
home/away with the division: lions, bears, and packers..oh my!
we get the nfc south next year: falcons/panthers at home, saints/bucs on the road (at least now we know we can win in new orleans!)
cowboys (home) and seahawks (road) are the other nfc division opponents - how is it possible we've played the seahawks in seattle for three years in a row???
and we get the afc south next year: jags/titans at home, texans/colts on the road

future
spielman, zimmer, and cousins all have one year left on their contracts. doesn't seem to be any indication, at least right now, that renegotiation is taking place or will take place soon (before the season starts). so next year is shaping up to be a pretty big make or break year for the whole team. could be a lot of changes this off-season but if next year doesn't meet the owners expectations the 2021 off-season could be a complete overhaul

so, what are the vikings needs? what positions have to be addressed? who should they draft, sign, cut, etc?

Looks like Stefanski is off to be HC of the Browns. I’d like to see Shurmur back, especially if Kubiak doesn’t want the job.

shurmur would be great, but man it seems like sliding kubiak to oc is the obvious move they'll make

Based on the role Kubiak had, I’m not sure he wants to be a full-time coordinator (I don’t remember seeing him on the sidelines during games). If he wants it, it probably is his.

yeah, and who knows how well shurmur and kubiak would mix (because regardless of role he's probably staying involved)

more likely kubiak's son klint or rick dennison gets the gig

I think Klint Kubiak will be next OC, allows his dad to say in his advisor/mentor role and let's his son step up. Don't thing Gary Kubiak wants the full time coordinator level responsibility any more.

Going to be an interesting offseason. Tons of free agents, major problem spots in the secondary and offensive line, and zero cap space to do anything about it. Hope we can hang on to Harris; despite all of our whiffs at WR and CB with top picks, he's another fringe prospect we've developed into an quality player. Would cut Rhodes and let Griffen walk in a heartbeat if we can use that money to keep him.

A lot of our defensive players are getting older. It's going to be interesting to see if they can replace them and maintain a reasonable level of play.
The Defensive Coordinator George Edwards is gone now too. It's kind of an interesting move, since we know Zimmer is the man in charge of the defense.

Nope. Well, maybe in 2021 with a new GM/Coach yes. This year, nope.

I'm 100% fine with going with a major tank job next year to get Lawrence. That dude has greatness written all over him, he is pretty much elite in every area of the game. Whoever gets him I think will have an elite QB for 15+ years.

I think Trevor Lawrence is pretty great, but there's no realistic chance we tank for him. And if you look at the career arc of someone like Andrew Luck, it's probably better that way. The future is just too unpredictable given what we would probably have to do to get a real shot at him.

That's a tough call. Obviously more cap space could go a long way in filling some of the holes we have, but I also think we're pretty limited on how far we can advance with Cousins unless we can really upgrade the pass protection.

Just look what you can do with a good line. Garoppolo threw 8 passes -- 8!!! -- and some no-name I'd never heard of before last week had the second-most rushing yards in playoff history. Some of the holes they opened up were absolutely shocking.

that's why i kind of hope they don't extend dalvin to a big deal. whatever it is will be too much to pay a running back. if they let him walk at the end of his deal that money can go to continue to bolster the line (or elsewhere) and if you have a good enough line you can find anybody to run behind it

This is a very prevalent school of thought. Bill Barnwell did a breakdown a month or so ago about the recent big contracts for running backs, and none of them have been worth it. It sucks because I think he's a great player, but between that and his lack of durability you'd have to think long and hard about breaking the bank for him.

Looks like Kubiak Sr. took the job as the OC.
