According to a league source, Minnesota is offering Houston a third-round 2008 draft pick in exchange for backup Sage Rosenfels, who went 4-1 last season in place of injured Texans starter Matt Schaub. Houston, which finished a franchise-best 8-8 last season, is said to be seeking a second-round pick in exchange for Rosenfels, who is not a free agent.

I watched as much of the Texans as I could last year (had both Schaub and Sage on my ff team), and the feeling I got watching him was that there was no drop off from Schaub to Rosenfels. Obviously I'm just looking at one season here but IMO he's worth the 3rd rounder.

btw, interesting fact. A February 2007 edition of the Sporting News gave offseason awards and predicted that Sage would be 2007's Tony Romo, the breakout quarterback of the year coming from a backup role.

Between 2005-2007, Rosenfels was the catalyst behind three furious comebacks of nineteen points or more. In 2005, Rosenfels led the Miami Dolphins to a 24-23 victory over the Buffalo Bills after trailing 23-3 when Rosenfels entered the game. In 2006, the Houston Texans trailed the Tennessee Titans 21-3 before he threw three second-half touchdown passes to cut the lead to 28-22 as time ended the comeback. In 2007, the Houston Texans trailed the Tennessee Titans 32-7 entering the fourth quarter. Rosenfels tied an NFL record by throwing four 4th-quarter touchdown passes to give the Texans a 36-35 lead before Rob Bironas kicked his NFL-record 8th field goal to give the Titans a 38-36 win. Rosenfels finished the 2007 season at 4-1 as a starter, in comparison to Schaub's 4-7 on the season.

Only thing that is interesting to me is if the Vikings are willing to give a 3rd for him that tells me they think he could have a good chance at being the starting QB. Make no mistake about it, they are not trying to trade for Sage as a backup.

You could also argue he is much better than any available QB

1 Todd Collins, Redskins: $4 million.
2 Cleo Lemon, Dolphins: $3 million.
3. Byron Leftwich, Falcons: $2.5 million.
4. Quinn Gray, Jaguars: $2 million.
5. Billy Volek, Chargers: $1.5 million.

Take Leftwich off that list. Also Collins and Volek might be a decent patch up job but they would never get the job done long term. So if we're looking for a young guy to compete for the starting job this season and beyond, which I think the Vikings are looking for, we are left with Lemon and Gray from that list. I would rather have Sage than those two. And if the Vikings are willing to give a 3rd for him, I am guessing they would rather have him too.

Just for some fun..

This is from another birdy

The offer is on the table, but the Texans haven't accepted it yet. They want a 2nd round pick.

Vikings | Team offers third-round pick for Rosenfels
Thu, 28 Feb 2008 16:00:09 -0800

Kevin Seifert, of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, reports the Minnesota Vikings offered the Houston Texans a third-round draft pick for QB Sage Rosenfels, who is under contract.

Remember, the vikings have 2 thirds this year.

Oh, nevermind. Guess there is no need for excitment

SAGE TALKS END

Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that talks between the Vikings and the Texans regarding a trade that would have sent quarterback Sage Rosenfels from Houston to Minnesota have ended.

The Vikings offered a third-round pick; the Texans wanted a second-round pick.

The Vikes could now pursue J.P. Losman, who has asked to be traded out of Buffalo.

Sage for a 2nd is a lot. But he is a good prospect. The back-up QB spot is going to be interesting to watch.

The offer is off the table. I thought a third rounder was kind of high for Rosenfels so I'm pretty glad Houston didn't accept the offer. I wouldn't mind Trent Green as a backup assuming his brain still works.
