Justin Smith thread

SMITH TO VISIT VIKES

As owner Zygi Wilf's plane heads to California to fetch receiver Bernard Berrian, the Vikes also have made arrangements for a Friday visit from Bengals defensive end Justin Smith.

Smith played for Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier when Frazier worked in that same role with the Bengals.

The Vikings have a need for help at defensive end because Kenechi Udeze recently was diagnosed with leukemia. Smith was Cincinnati's franchise player in 2007.

From what I read the vikings have him first, and plan on snagging him before the niners get a chance.

Turns out the Niners would rather go after Dontarious Thomas anyway.

NINERS START SPENDING

Though none are all that high in profile, the 49ers have already made a few moves in free agency.

The Niners reportedly have agreed to terms with Lions quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan, running back DeShaun Foster, and Vikings linebacker Dontarrius Thomas. Foster recently had been released by the Panthers.

Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rose Press-Democrat also reports that the Niners will host defensive end Justin Smith on Friday. Smith is scheduled to visit the Vikings, too.

Finally, receiver Isaac Bruce could be heading to San Fran, where he'd be reunited with former Rams coach Mike Martz, who's now the offensive coordinator of the Niners.

REPORT OF NINERS SIGNINGS PREMATURE

A league source tells us that the report from the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat that the Niners have signed quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan, linebacker Dontarrius Thomas, and running back DeShaun Foster are premature.

Per the source, contact has been made by the 49ers with each player, but no deal has been done. Yet.

Hopefully your guy isnt the same guy that has a problem with his premature posting.

Maiocco's usually right on point, so it wouldn't surprise me to see those signings go through.

From Maiocco's blog:

9:41 a.m.: I asked (via text message) Justin Smith's agent, Jim Steiner, if his client will visit the Vikings after meeting with the 49ers today. His answer: "That's our intent!"

I would be REAL happy if we got Justin Smith. He solidifies one part of the D-line. I've heard a lot of people compare him to Kenechi but I think what sets them apart is Smith's motor. I think Smith playing alongside the Williams Wrecking Crew would equate to 8-10 sacks.

That seems to be the view of everyone right now. It also frees our 1st rd pick up to get something besides De or get an even further upgrade to DE.

Justin Smith is still in the Bay Area as of 35-40 minutes ago.

He's scheduled to have dinner with his agent and some of the 49ers brass, including head coach Mike Nolan.

Smith still intends to visit Minnesota tomorrow but the 49ers are likely going to offer him a contract.

Fox sports radio reported that the Niners have a "cap" on how much money they are willing to give smith and that is the biggest problem. Vikings are spending money so if it gets in a bidding war I like our odds.

The fact that Smith's visit got pushed back to tommorow is no concern of mine. We signed M.Williams today which shows Smith that our defense is commited. And they were teammates.

I would maybe compare Smith to either a Aaron Kampman or Adam Carriker type.

Aaron Kampman is two times the pass rusher Smith is. Smith is a complete, solid, all-around player. Kampman is a game changer at DE. Smith is just solid.

The San Franciso 49ers and defensive end Justin Smith agreed to a six-year, $45 million contract that included $20 million in guarantees.

Smith, who had played all of his seven previous seasons in the NFL in Cincinnati, was given the franchise tag by the Bengals in 2007.

Smith was the fourth overall pick in the 2001 draft out of Missouri. He has 43
