Re: Vikings Draft Discussion Thread
I'm not a big fan of the positions he has a us drafting in the first 2 rounds, especially a TE in the 2nd round, but I think the Vikings can afford to draft BPA this year at almost any position. If that's how it works out, fine.

Re: Vikings Draft Discussion Thread
i don't know how this is all gonna play out logistically, but everybody's saying the top 8 teams can't splurge in the uncapped free agency period, so I think that forces the Vikings into drafting purely by need in the draft. To me that means O line, or possibly anywhere on the defense if Ray Edwards doesn't come back, but for sure the secondary w/ the safeties being mediocre at best, Cedric being up and down, and Winfield getting old. Also the linebacking core w/ Henderson being hit w/ some major injuries, not sure how much that slows him down, and Leber is getting old. And if they think a difference maker DT is there, they have to look at that for sure too.
Seems to me thats how it'd play out unless I'm mis-reading the details of how the free agency period is gonna work for the Vikings w/ an uncapped year.

Re: Vikings Draft Discussion Thread
Edwards is a restricted free agent if it's uncapped, so he's not going anywhere.
I don't know about fixing the O-line at the top of the draft, the only guys we'd be able to replace where we're drafting is Herrera or possibly Sullivan and we probably want to give Sullivan another year.
On defense, we've got functional backups at most spots. Asher Allen, Benny Sapp, Jasper Brinkley, Jimmy Kennedy, Jamarcus Sanford are all guys we could live with. We're also pretty invested in our starting safeties, Williams was a big free agent and Johnson was a 2nd round pick.
I think our biggest needs are corner and linebacker because of injuries. I've heard both Griffin and Winfield might be questionable to start the year. The only positions we can't draft in the first 2 rounds are probably receiver, running back and defensive end. I'd definitely prefer someone who can help immediately, but I don't think we can rule out a QB.

Re: Vikings Draft Discussion Thread
I'm not sure about taking a TE either. We have Shiancoe who can catch and Kleinsasser/Dugan who can block. TE seems pretty solid to me.
Not sure about Pike in the 1st, but if he is good enough, I guess. I'd rather only take a QB in the 1st if Bradford or Clausen somehow fall. Or look at Pike or McCoy with our 2nd, Lefevour with our 3rd. I really like Lefevour, but that is about as much as a "fan" likes a QB. I don't know to much about him.
I'd like(not in any order of want):
1st: Brandon Spikes, LB / Kyle Wilson, CB / Perrish Cox, CB / Taylor Mays, S / DT
2nd: Chad Jones, S / Dominique Franks, CB / Colt McCoy, QB / DT
3rd: Dan Lefevour, QB / Daryl Washington, LB
4th: OL / Best Available
5th-7th: Best Available
I just threw that together based off of basic positions of Icness' mock.

Re: Vikings Draft Discussion Thread
i've also been wondering on te, Icness has had us taking one in the last couple mocks, even though we seem to be good in that area
i think that he might be going on where he thinks the players should go not as much on whether the team needs them, but i'm not sure

You have them taking Pike in the first round is that because you think favre's retiring or coming back
or will they just go best available
I don't think it matters if Favre stays or goes. I know they like Pike and he fits more with the kind of offense Chilly wants to run than what TJax does. If Favre plays another year that just means Pike gets extra time to learn the offense. Pike might not last that long though, and I don't see them arbitrarily taking a QB in the 1st or 2nd.
I do think Favre is coming back, FYI.
from Icness
what are your guys' thoughts on pike, i haven't seen much of him at all

http://football.realgm.com/src_wiretap_ ... ersion_80/
vikes picks
30. Minnesota Vikings: Mike Iupati, G, Idaho.
62. Minnesota Vikings: Thaddeus Gibson, DE/OLB, Ohio State
94. Minnesota Vikings: Tony Moeaki, TE, Iowa
126. Minnesota Vikings: Dan Lefevour, QB, Central Michigan
i think Moeaki is more Icness putting him around where he should be drafted, not that we need a TE. probably should look for some help for the CB/S

Re: Vikings Draft Discussion Thread
I'd like to sign a CB in FA, and draft a DT and an OL in the first two rounds. Kennedy's a free agent, and the Williams have the starcaps trial going on, I think we need help there if we're going to maintain our identity as a top run stopping defense.

Re: Vikings Draft Discussion Thread
I don't see a need to. If we like a guy, it's a possibility but I'd rather have players that can help us get over the hump this year. McNabb will be a free agent next year if he doesn't get traded this year, and Tjack seems like he's still improving.

Agree wormy,
The Qbs in this draft outside the studs are all career backups in my opinion. OL/DT/CB/FS should be the focus of the first 4 picks.

Re: Vikings Draft Discussion Thread
With Chester Taylor gone to Chicago, any thoughts on where the Vikings may grab a RB? I think 3rd or 4th rd maybe?

Re: Vikings Draft Discussion Thread
Without taking into consideration BPA, I think 3rd or 4th would be a good round to take a running back. McCluster is the one I want, but I think he's supposed to go in the 2nd.

Re: Vikings Draft Discussion Thread
Scat back 3rd down type you think?
1. McCluster
2. Best
3. McNight
Seem to be the 2nd to late 3rd rd options for that type of back.

Re: Vikings Draft Discussion Thread
I think you want someone can catch and block, and if they're explosive even better. I know the first two are explosive, and McKnight was supposed to be the top recruit coming out of high school. McCluster played a lot of receiver, so he can catch. I don't know if any of them can block.

This is the quietest I've seen this board around draft time in about 5 yrs.
Are we all just playing the Favre waiting game?
