RB by Committee vs. The Passing Game

Post#1 » by Parliament10 » Fri Oct 9, 2009 3:38 am

The RB by Committee can be used to aggressively confuse and penetrate the opposition. With 4 options every game, and five on the active roster, it's tough to plan for.
So, why aren't we using it more?

Brady's good, but he'll be spent by the post-season if he wears out his arm with too much passing.
And truthfully, that's why we lost that last Super Bowl. Everybody was too tired.
Passing and Running have to be done in tandem to keep the opposition on their toes.
Too much of either, and they'll read you.
Mixing it up, will have the Passing game taking pressure off of the Running game, and the Running game taking pressure off of the Passing game.

Looks like Fred Taylor's going to be out for awhile after an ankle operation.
Which is tough since he's actually leading the team in yardage.
Word is that he'll be able to return later in the season.
Injuries are part of football, it's just a consequence of the game.

Smartly though, the Pats have great Depth at the RB. BenJarvus Green-Ellis remains inactive for the 45-man game day. But, does remain on the full 53-man roster. That's no accident.
With Taylor down, Green-Ellis can step in without a hitch.
I'd like to see a RB on the Practice Squad, just for increased insurance. But, we do have the obscure Eric Kettani on the Reserve Military. And Chris Taylor on IR for next season.

The Basic Question:
At what ratio should we Run vs. Pass?

The more complicated Question:
What should we be doing with the screen-pass; across the middle; on the outside; TE usage (Chris Baker's basically a backup WR), 3rd down with Kevin Faulk, and what to do with Joey Galloway, Julian Edleman, Sam Aiken and Mathew Slater, once he's back from that elbow injury?
"You have to put the work in.
Nothing is given."

1. The Pats need to run the ball at least 30 times a game. They have to keep teams off balance. I thought they did a great job against the Falcons and Ravens in that area.

2. The screen pass, I'd like to see more of it. This is pretty much a run to begin with and can really help for big plays. I'd like see Maroney get a few chances so he can take it to that next level on the defense.

3. The Pats did not lose the Super Bowl because of the run. They lost because the Giants front four dominated that game.

4. I think you'll see a lot of 2 tight ends in the game against the Broncos. Some power running and some passes to Baker and Watson over the middle.

5. Kevin Faulk needs to become a bigger part of this offense. I used to like when he lined up as a wide receiver. It seems Sammy Morris has taken the wide receiver role from Faulk.

6. What to do with Joey Galloway? Have him figure out the system? Can play if you don't know what your doing. Julian Edelman has showed a little bit of promise, but it's a lot to ask from a 7th round QB. Sam Aiken is not a good wide receiver nor will he become one this season. And Matt Slater is back from the injury, I think he can help the return game. But as a receiver he won't help.

7. What I would like to see the team do is a trade a 3rd or 4th round pick for a wide receiver. Not sure their cap, but someone like Deion Branch for one year could be very nice.
