I don't know about anyone else, but i really want Darren McFadden. The kid is by far the most talented offensive player in the draft. A real game changer, who can catch balls and be a feature back. Passing on him, when the Patriots have no glaring needs, would be extremely foolhardy. Besides Maroney has not progressed the way everyone hoped, and it appears as though Bill doesn't really seem to fit into the offensive scheme.

Does the Samuel situation change how the Pats could approach this pick? Branch netted them a first round pick and Samuel is playing well this season and is close to, and perceived by some, to be a shut down corner. He could surely net a first round pick in a trade, at least. So then you're looking at a top 5 pick with the Niners pick and a pick probably around the 20s with the Samuel trade. That could open things up to take an offensive lineman or a corner or a linebacker in the 20s and go for broke on McFadden with the top 5 pick. mahalo

Not like in the NBA but, unless things changed under the last CBA, the Pats can still franchise Samuels again. At that point, he would piss and moan and then be traded to another team who would sign him to a long term deal. That was one reason for them to franchise him this time but no team was willing to give up a first and third for him. A few teams just might after this season. mahalo

Most players are only franchised once but I believe you can do it as many times as you wish, in theory. I think Walter Jones was tagged like 3 or 4 times. The Pats only tagged Adam once because they had a gentleman's agreement not to do it again. There are some small pint details in regards to franchising a player, like you have a certain window to give them a long term deal otherwise, if you give it to them after that window, you lose the franchise tag for the life of the deal and what not. But unless something changed in the last CBA, I believe you can franchise guys multiple times. Samuels, understandably, would be pissed because he wants a long term deal but if he continues to play very well this season, I think there would be a few teams willing to part with picks.
I don't think the amount of compensation is set in stone, I know a lot of guys are traded for first and thirds so I threw that out there but in reality, the only necessary part I believe is a first round pick. Someone like BBJ who knows the CBA better than me would know better. mahalo

Franchised players are like restricted free agents, If you want to sign one you have to give the team which owns his rights compensation. For a regular franchised player the compensation is two 1st round picks. You can also make them an exclusive franchised player, who cannot sign with another team.
If they franchise him this year, his cost will go up.
