Iggles sign Asante Samuel, what happens now?

Not that any rational person expected him back this year, but he's officially gone. Six years of i'm assuming a big salary.

To give this thread a little more substance, who should we be looking at to fill his void? Ellis Hobbs looked anywhere from outstanding to pitiful game-to-game last year, so he can't be reasonably be expected to fit in easily as the #1 corner next year. Do we spend the #7 on a CB? Look in a later round? Sign a cheaper veteran and hope for the best?

So long Asante, you will be missed. Good move on going to the eagles rather then the jets.

Alot are saying that with this, Lito Sheppard becomes available. If thats true, we have to jump in on that. He is the best option available.

They are scheduled to have a meeting with Jason Webster. Yep, Jason Webster. While he isn't that bad, that shows us how thin the CB crop is for FA this year. Too bad for the franchise tag, otherwise there would have been three great corners on the market, (Samuel, Trufant, Asamougha).

It looks like Ty Law might come back, but he is no longer a good number 1.

The CB's in the draft are not really getting me excited enough to take them with a number 7 pick. I would much rather take Ghoulston, or trade down.

So it looks like if the patriots really want to fill that void, they have to make a push for Lito. Then I would like to see them sign law to a deal as a backup. C'mon Pioli, make it happen!!

jason webster? not too bad? you can't be serious. he is one of the worst corner's in the league. period.

i was never a big asante fan, but rest assured, there is no way that webster and samuel should be in the same breath.

At what point there did I compare them. Or say he could replace asante

It was pretty obvious I was saying that the cornerback crop this year is very weak. I know very little about Jason Webster (serious) but I assumed he cant be that ****, why would BB and Pioli waste there time?

I say just acquire a cheap FA and/or draft someone in the later rounds. Who? I don't know (Sammy Davis, Andre Dyson, Drayton Florence, Travis Fisher, et al). It's just a cornerback. No sense is spending a 7th pick on one or signing some high-priced cornerback when there are actual needs on the team like getting younger and better and faster at linebacker.

Am I alone in thinking that cornerback is the least crucial position on the field and also the easiest one to fill through the draft?

Think Aaron Glenn would wanna come here? He doesn't have a ring. I don't know if he has anything left in the tank, but maybe he'd be a good guy to have in the rotation.

Chad Scott and Eugene Wilson might both be gone too. Looks like the only guys who are under contract right now are Hobbs, Meriweather, Sanders and Harrison. LOL. Also, Antwain Spann, Willie Andrews and Mike Richardson, but yeah.

Antoine Cason in the draft?

While it sucks to see Asante go. I dont think he is worth 10 million per. Either sign a stop gap FA. Not sure we use our first pick on one though. Their seems to be a lot of CB depth in the draft. Maybe we go after some in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Also, Eugine Wilson could possibly shift back over to CB.

Yeah the defense as a whole is looking kind of shaky. I'm sure Pioli and BB will make it work though. As far as Cason goes I think he'd a be a GREAT pick. I live in AZ so I've seen him play a lot on FSN and ****, and he's a baller. He came up huge against Oregon this year, and plays well in general.

Trade pick #7 for two later round 1st round picks and lets pick Cromartie out of Tennesse State and the the kid from BC that plays O-line.

Cromartie is looking like hes going to be something speciel 8)

gotta garee here. the 7 pick is too high for any corner i think in this draft, but with the performances this kid has put up Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (yes, of THAT Cromartie family) is looking like he could end up the best corner in the draft. he dominated his small school competition, played well against the big schools they played, and is testing out like nuts (4.28!). small school DBs for whatever reason seem to have a better success rate coming into the league than other small school players, so im not too concerned about that.

About Asante... i enjoyed his game, i always have, i remember when we drafted him in the 4th out of Central Florida i had a feeling hed become a baller, and he has. however, just as I wouldnt have paid him #1 corner money after only one season playing like a #1 corner, i jave some real reservations about paying him what the eagles did. i dont think i pay that much for any corner who isnt deion sanders, champ bailey level... and anyone who says asante is as good as bailey is stretching it, a lot. asante played with a far superior defense last year than he will going forward, and that may seriously affect him. how much of his game is real and how much is hype, its not a question we can honestly answer right now. his loss may not affect us as much as anticipated, it remains to be seen.

one thing that is for sure, if he deserved that kind of money, the pats wouldve given it. also for sure is that DLines dont get better than ours, even when seymour is hurt, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out. also, yes asante had the most interceptions in the league the last two years, and more than half of them were in the year before last. this past season he didnt improve. i dont know that i would say he regressed, but he definitely wasnt better. and our secondary definitely wasnt bad, but they only made a few game changing plays, and that was as a whole, not just asante. antonio cromartie was WAY more impressive last season. so again, not necessarily a knock on asante, but not to his credit either.

i have a hard time believeing asante made the patriots d more than they made him. i think the only players who are just as good beyond the sum of this defense are a fully healthy seymour, adalius who was clearly having some trouble at times (not trouble adjusting but trouble excelling, i expect much more this year), and maybe wilfork. everyone else i think is a worse player when put on another team. and its not like any of us think asante didnt have his flaws. his run support improved a lot in the last few years, but he did have some coverage lapses, and we were one of the top sacking defenses in the league, which makes coverage markably easier.

it may not be easy to find a corner to replace him right away, but forgive me if im wrong i remember not too long ago nfl analysts talking about lito sheppard being better than asante, so it may not be as easy for asante to earn his money without the support he had here. doesnt matter right? he "got paid"

also, the jets not showing ANY interest makes me that much more confident in the opinion of pats personnel on asante.

Where'd he sign.

I thought he was going to be great for years to come. He got back from his injury last year, but didn't start. Was he still half-injured? Or did Sanders just outplay him. Seemed to be in Bellichick's dog house for some reason.

PFT is reporting a handful of teams interested in Lito Sheppard, the pats are not one of them.

But, someone on the GB, said that Miami radio is reporting that the pats, saints and bucs are all showing heavy interest in Deangalo Hall.

ugh, thats scary... moss i always liked even through his adversity...deangelo is scary in terms of talent, but personality as well... i think i wanna go back to the old days where we built more on character...maybe then wed lose during the season and not the playoffs (ouch that joke hurts)

then again, theyre probably able to acquire deangelo for less than full value and that may be their whole interest

D Fall has alll the talent in the world but he doesn't have the head or the disclipline to maximize the talent.

he will also ask for and probabbly receive way more money than he was worth. for a "shut down corner" he gives up way to many big games to the number 1 receivers he matches up with.

id rather have hall than pacman, but id rather see someone like sheppard... or id really like it if asomugha didnt reach a deal with the raiders and they took the tag off him later in the offseason so he could reach a deal for less than he would now...potentially
