Draft Thread--Patriots select Chung. Brace. Butler. Vullmer.

Post#1 » by Celtics_Champs » Tue Dec 30, 2008 5:33 pm

Draft picks:
Patrick Chung
Ron Brace
Darius Butler
Sebastian Vollmer
Brandon Tate
Tyrone Mckenzie
Rich Ohrnberger
George Bussey
Jake Ingram
Myron Pryor
Julian Edelman
Darryl Richard

Here are the patriots draft choices:

Round 1 Pick 23 23 Overall Assigned Selection
Round 2 Pick 2 34 Overall From Kansas City
Round 2 Pick 15 47 Overall From San Diego
Round 2 Pick 26 58 Overall Assigned Selection
Round 3 Pick 25 89 Overall Assigned Selection
Round 4 Pick 24 * Assigned Selection
Round 6 Pick 26 * Assigned Selection
Round 7 Pick 25 * Assigned Selection

Update: Patriots select 23rd overall.

Too early? No...

The NFL released its first-round draft order today, and the Patriots are currently slotted in the No. 24 spot.

Unless the chargers, eagles, vikings or cardinals make it to the super bowl. We stay at the spot.

The Patriots also have the chargers 2nd round pick this year in addition to ours. Plus, because of Pioli, McDaniels and Cassel. The pats have a lot of assets to get another first rounder.

Like every year, its LB and Corner as our needs. But I think we should go corner with our number 1 pick though. Guyton, Mayo, even vince redd stepped up this year. While the CB situation is a joke. WIlhite showed a little promise at the end, but thats about it.

I see the Patriots targeting a tackle or possibly a linebacker early. The problem with taking defensive backs is that there’s usually a major drop-off after the elite talent; most times there’s very little separating a late first-round talent and a third-round talent, or at least enough to justify taking a DB early on.

Jamon Meredith seems like a good fit at 24. He’s got the size and speed to fit in perfectly with the Patriots’ hybrid blocking scheme and he seems like the gritty type of instinctive lineman that Belichick loves.

I could also see them taking Darius Butler out of UConn. That wouldn’t be a bad fit; even though I just said you probably shouldn’t take a DB in the late first, he’s an incredibly physical presence off the line, speedy, and is one of the better all-around coverage DBs in the draft. He reminds me a bit of Ty Law in that he plays bigger than his size and isn’t above jostling more physical receivers.

Yeah, OL is definitely a need. When you have Cassel sacked more then any other QB.

Virginia is always stacked in that department. Where is Eugene Monroe looked at going? Oh, geez, never mind. Scouts Inc. has him on their top 10 big board.

This guys name makes me want to select him "Phil Loadholt."

So we don't make the playoffs, but we get to pick after teams that do. Really not seeing how that is fair.

Anyway on to the actual topic. Have to admit I haven't really started to look into the draft. But one player I do like is CB out of Cincy Mike Mikens. He is 6'0", but doesn't have much weight to him. However he does play physical and has good ball skills.

To be fair, a lot of those sacks had to do with Cassel’s penchant for running out of the pocket at the first sign of trouble. It’s tough to maintain your blocking assignment when your QB is running all over the place behind you.

Overall, I thought the line did pretty well, all things considered. The only true disappointment was Mankins, who seemed lost picking up interior blitzes but he was still a mauler in the running game. Light was Light; couldn’t handle speed rushers, struggled getting to the second level on end-out running plays but he wasn’t any worse than last year, which we should be thankful for. Koppen’s troubles had more to do with Cassel than with technique. Only Kaczur and Neal were bad but I think Neal’s troubles were that he had to make up for Kaczur’s gaffes.

I see the team looking to upgrade Kaczur immediately in the draft while grooming the player to eventually shift over to the left when Light’s time is up.

Let's hope mankins can get back to form. I really don't know what you can blame his off year for. I like neal. Love Koppen. Don't hate Light. The only one I would really like to see them take a replacement for is Kaczur.

As for CB, I love Malcolm Jenkins, he won't fall, but I applaud him for staying another year. I think, well hope he becomes a beastly corner in the NFL. Macho harris would not be a bad selection.

It's so lame we'll be picking after the Chargers. Not fair at all!

I want the safety from USC Mays, he is a Rodney Harrison clone.

From what I've seen of Mays I'm not very impressed. I just don't think his game translates well to the NFL. Misses too many tackles IMO, goes for the kill way too much. He sure is a good athlete tho.

I'm hoping they can land a 1st for Cassel from either Detroit (#20 overall from Dallas) or Minnesota (#23) and deal up for Rey Maualuga if he goes 10th or later. I think he's going to be an absolute stud and having him and Mayo inside for the next decade or so would be unreal. 6'3, 260, figures to run a 4.6 forty of so. Huge hitter, good pass rusher and pretty good in coverage. Only downside would be he's a freelancer, but BB could coach him up and has coached 2 of the bigger freelancers in NFL history (LT and Seau).

If not Maualuga, Brandon Spikes looks pretty damn good to me.

One of the eagles or cardinals will make it to the super bowl. So the patriots now select 23rd. Good job NFC!

Chargers got eliminated, so we can not jump up any more. But in a way it is not all that bad, because we get there crappy record of a pick in the second round, which should be 45-48, if I did the math right.

Patriots select 3 times in the first 55 picks. Some good assets.

Early scouting start is a plus about not making the playoffs.

Players the patriots have looked at. According to draftcountdown.com

Alex Mack
Macho Harris
Keenan Lewis
Rey Maualuga
Robert Ayers

real glad they're looking at Macho.

Macho Harris would be cool. I also would noty mind Moreno or the running back from Pitt.

From SI about Harris from day 3, "Victor "Macho" Harris/CB/Virginia Tech: Harris has been anything but macho in Mobile and was consistently beaten in practice Wednesday. He plays very soft in coverage and gave up receptions down the field on a number of occasions.

About Rey Maualuga/LB/USC from day 1.: Maualuga looked rusty today, both physically and mentally. He's not in the best of shape and was very hesitant to make decisions on the field. Maualuga seemed to get his bearings as the day proceeded, but his play was not reminiscent of a potential top-five pick.

That sucks for Rey. He would have been top ten pick last year, and now he is dropping off. Same with Laurinitus.

Anyone been watching the Combine? Interesting stuff.

Poor Rey, pulls up right after he ran his forty.

I am really liking the other two LB's from USC though, Matthews and Cushing. I wasn't high on them before the combine, but they really impressed.

Clint Sintim intrigued me. He played for Groh at Virginia in a 3-4. I think he would fit in nice here.

I'm a big Brian Cushing fan. Don't think he makes it to the Pats tho.

lol, I sent in this question to reiss mailbag for next week, and he emailed me back like two hours later. Talk about a hard worker.

Mike, what is your take on Louis Delmas? I read that the Patriots had met with him. Do you think that is someone the pats are going to take 23rd overall?

Hi Matt,

I heard that Delmas isn't that smart. Not a Patriots type guy.
