Pioli to the Chiefs. Floyd Reese Hired.

UPDATE: Pioli went to the chiefs. Floyd Reese has been hired. Caserio promoted.

It is looking good so far. The chiefs made a huge offer, reportedly, and he hasn't accepted it yet. Maybe he really doesn't want to leave.

Thats not it though. Let's just say that Pioli does take that offer. Herm will be out. He will need a new head coach. Enter McDaniels. With McDaniels and Pioli in K.C. and the Pats having Cassel for trade bait, would pioli and BB do a little swap to help each other out. Cassel for the number 3 pick? :) Ok, maybe that is still too much for cassel, but plenty of trade options open up.

So far it is looking like a win-win situation. He either stays. Or he goes to KC where plenty of trade option open up.

Yeah, isn't there usually some form of compensation in these situation?
Cassel for LJ and Gonzalez, it works in Madden!
Seriously though, with Pioli's track record they should have to hand over a decent amount of picks.

Surprisingly that was another two names reiss brought up when answering emails. I remember back when LJ was in the draft, some mocks had BB showing interest in him. That doesn't mean much at all though.

If they end up cutting ties with one of the Maroney/Jordan/Morris crew I'd like to see them give him a shot. Obviously I think Bill and Scott have a lot more info than I do on him so whatever choice they make I'll buy into.
I also really doubt they let go of LM now though, seeing how his value is so low, If any of the backs I see Jordan being the odd man out.

I know it's not usually cool to link other forums, so feel free to delete this if need be, but someone on sonsofsamhorn said Pioli is in negotiations with KC.

Sports radio in KC is reporting it from what I read. Damn. That would really suck to see him go. More then Weis, Crennel, and Mangini combined.

So now if he leaves, who takes over? Maybe Parcells will get out of his deal and come here.

It will be interesting to see how they go about his "replacement". Maybe just stay in house and groom one of the other personnel guys with Bill having a stronger say for the time being.

Figured it was going to happen. He goes to a team with a loyal owner and should be able to do well. They have a great fan base and he really will be starting off from scratch there. How many days till Edwards gets the boot?

Also looks like Capers and Seeley will be out as Pats coaches as well. Looks like they will pretty much have a new coaching staff minus of course BB and Dean.

From the Globe

Pioli's departure came one day after Patriots defensive coordinator Josh McDaniels became head coach of the Denver Broncos. And there could be more changes, as the Boston Globe is reporting that special teams coach Brad Seeley and secondary coach Dom Capers aren't expected to return.

And it looks like Capers might be following McDaniels and not Pioli. From the Denver Post

McDaniels also is pursuing coaching veteran Dom Capers, who, despite having a year remaining on his contract with New England, was not expected to return to the Patriots for the 2009 season. Nolan and Capers are well-versed in the 3-4 defense (three linemen, four linebackers), so if the Broncos determine they have enough, or can obtain enough, players to play it, they could take the field that way as soon as next season.

Philadelphia Eagles secondary coach Sean McDermott also is being considered for a position on McDaniels' staff. McDermott, who is believed to have a year remaining on his contract, is off limits for interviews because his team still is in the playoffs.

Patriots special teams coach Brad Seely, who has been on that team's coaching staff for a decade and is the only holdover from Pete Carroll's time with the team, will get heavy consideration for that job with the Broncos.

Also from the Boston Herald it looks like Seeley may be joining the "Rat" in Cleveland.
According to a league source, a final decision should be made in the next 24-48 hours on whether special teams coach Brad Seely will leave the Pats after 10 years to join new Browns coach Eric Mangini’s staff. One of the most respected coaches at his position in the business, Seely had previously spoken to the Seattle Seahawks, though they’re no longer in the picture, the source said.

If a deal is reached, Mangini’s three most important coordinator slots would be filled by ex-Patriots coaches, with Brian Daboll expected as offensive coordinator and Rob Ryan on the defensive side.

A Seely departure would leave the Pats with only two coaches who pre-date Belichick’s arrival in 2000. Those two coaches Ivan Fears (running backs) and Dante Scarnecchia (offensive line).

Dante, man they should put a statue of that guy in Foxboro, what a trooper. the epitome of unsung hero.
I don't mind any of the other guys going to Denver and KC, Cleveland on the other hand.... You're dead to me!

Another coach out the door. From rotoworld.com

Pete Mangurian, the Patriot's tight ends coach since 2005, will not be back with the team next season according to a league source.

Mangurian is the fourth member of Bill Belichick's staff to leave in the off-season. The Boston Globe suggested Mangurian was miffed he was not elevated to the vacant offensive coordinator position

Ouch. Wasn't he a candidate to take over the offense too?

Looks like Bill O'brien may get the OC job. From rotoworld.com

"The Boston Herald wouldn't be surprised if quarterbacks coach Bill O'Brien takes on a Josh McDaniels role in a couple of years, "calling the shots in the Patriots offense and fielding offers from other teams."

O'Brien is considered an up-and-coming coach with a bright future. Even if head coach Bill Belichick takes over more play-calling duties in 2009, O'Brien is the leading candidate to move into the vacant offensive coordinator position."

Good. Looks like they are going to groom him this year then name him to the position the year after.

The loss of all these coaches is ridiculous though. Secondary coach, offensive coordinator, tight ends. Who is next?

Floyd Reese hired.

Image

The Patriots have hired Floyd Reese as a senior football advisor, a move that comes after vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli was hired by the Kansas City Chiefs as their general manager.

Wow, kind of a surprise. I didn't see this hire coming.

Reese was the GM of the titans before he was on ESPN. It's funny, I think I remember him always having good things to say about the patriots organization, BB and Kraft.

Also, Caserio has been promoted:

In addition to the hiring of Reese, the Patriots announced that Nick Caserio, as director of player personnel, will manage the daily operations of the personnel department, continuing to work closely with Patriots head coach Bill Belichick on all personnel matters.

BB said this:

"In Nick and Floyd, we have two outstanding men who each bring a wealth of knowledge and flexibility to this organization. I look forward to joining with both of them and working toward the common goal of our team's improvement and success.”

So it looks like a two headed monster of Reese and Caserio will be taking over Pioli's duties.

Nice!

Great hire. He looks half in the wrapper in that pic though.
