Cassel and Vrabel sent to KC for 34th pick

Post#1 » by Celtics_Champs » Sat Feb 28, 2009 6:06 pm

DONE DEAL:

http://www.boston.com/sports/football/p ... ils_3.html

King:
The New England Patriots have traded quarterback Matt Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel to Kansas City for the Chiefs' second-round pick in the 2009 draft, SI.com has learned.

Schefter:
The Kansas City Chiefs have completed a trade for New England Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel. There is no new contract in place, but the teams have agreed on compensation — details of which were not immediately available.

But it is a done deal. Cassel is going to Kansas City.

So after all that speculating, ha, it looks like Matt Cassel has indeed been dealt to the Chiefs along with Mike Vrabel for the 34th pick.

Re: Cassel dealt to chiefs. UPDATE: Surprise 3rd team involved

Post#2 » by Celtics_Champs » Sat Feb 28, 2009 6:38 pm

Tom E. Curran is reporting the 3rd pick is NOT involved.

Reiss is saying the deal is in place and the paperwork is headed towards the NFL office.

Schefter is reporting that a surprise third team has gotten into this.

King is reporting it is for the 2nd round pick of the KC Chiefs.

Finally! What an excrutiating 36 hours!
I'm wondering what the 3rd teams role will be in this, I wonder if we're just shipping off the picks...
Who is on the block we could use?

Man, my head is spinning.

Schefter who broke the story has this smirk on his face saying a surprise third team is involved.

Reiss is saying it is in place and the paperwork is ready.

But NBC is saying vrabel is involved in the deal, and it is Cassel plus vrabel for the 34th pick overall. If that is true, I totally overestimated their value.

Sorry for all the crazy posting, but reports are coming out every other minute. here is the final deal:
http://www.boston.com/sports/football/p ... ils_3.html

So what is your take on this deal? Is it a way to get cap room to get younger, by drafting and re-signing big vince. Or is it a prelude to a Ray Lewis or Julius Peppers deal.

I don't think any big FA is coming. The patriots are really moving hard to get younger. Look at all their picks! Draft weekend should be fun!

I'm surprised it is for only a second round pick. I mean a very good second round pick, but a second round pick nontheless.

I think that overall it's a good deal.

Matt went from being a scrub that everyone wanted cut in the preason to a second rounder. If someone told you during the preseason that we'd trade Cassel for a second rounder we would have told them to lay off the pipe.

While Vrabel still has some life in him the Pats obviously want to get younger at linebacker and his production dropped off last year. They have some good young guys in Mayo, Crable, Guyton (even Redd) in the linebacker spot along with Bruschi, Banta-Cain, Thomas and Woods.

They have some flexibility now in the draft to either move up or to trade a second rounder or two for a future first.

Add in the fact that they are now well under the cap and they can now be bigger players in free agency and they should be able to restock the team a bit.

Solid move.

My first reaction to this is what an awful deal, Mike Vrable and Cassle for only a 2nd round pick! There were rumors over the offseason we would be getting first round picks for Cassel from teams like the Vikings, but even I think that is stretch. A 2nd round pick strait up for Cassel and the clearing of that money is great, but we gave them Vrable too? Vrable is getting old yes, but he is only two years removed from having a pro bowl year and he was turning it around towards the end of last year. But like Mike said there is (hopefully) more to this deal, b/c right now its awful. We would have just trade Cassle. Now we are ultra thin at OLB again, which I hope is resolved with the draft. In what scenario would a team recieve two first round picks for a franchised player? Obviously it won't happen in this case, but right now I'm feeling we def. did not get the better part of this deal.

I'm disappointed...I thought we could get more. Who we gonna get for a back up QB?

We already have two backups.....O'Connell and Gutierrez. I wouldn't expect them to commit much more to it.

I honestly feel like a big FA is on the way. Who, I can't say but why else would they get this done so quick? Probably to sign someone with the freed up cap space (wishful thinking)!

Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

That's a weak argument. Those two have done absolutely nothing in the NFL. Didn't we learn that we need a solid backup last year?

And Cassel hasn't done anything before last year either. In fact, most Pats fans wanted him cut during training camp...

Yes, a backup. Not a league-average QB who will sit on the bench all season making Pro Bowler money.

I wanted him traded. I just thought we could get more. My point is that we should go after a veteran for a backup. Cassel was almost cut during the preseason because he played like crap but thankfully he wasn't cut and it worked out. We have other positions that are of a much greater need but if something happens, I'm not comfortable with people that haven't stared an NFL game

Doesn't matter, BB is still going to go with OC if brady gets injured.

As for getting more for cassel, I agree, and felt that way at first. But then I realized it just wasn't out there, its not BB or Reeses fault. The media gave us big heads thinking we could get a top 10 pick. when in fact the offers were pretty bad.

I am not buying this mort #12 pick report either.
