The Patriots acquired veteran tight end Alex Smith from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today in exchange for an undisclosed selection in the 2010 NFL Draft, the team announced today.
The Pats signed a Chris Baker this offseason too.
I think Ben Watson is a FA after next season, so I'm thinking with this trade for Alex Smith,
does that mean Watson won't be back after next season??

I think Watson, Smith and Thomas' contracts are up next season, my money would be Thomas is the one gone before the season.

Alright! I like this move. Yeah another TE, but I liked smith in TB. He was a after thought ever since the Winslow trade. Good to see the pats get him on the cheap.

Is he good at blocking or catching?

both. smith is a solid player who wouldnt normally be available. i think he hasnt been quite what tampa bay wouldve hoped, but certainly wouldnt have been available if they hadnt acquired kellen winslow.
smith is a better receiver than blocker, and while he isnt outstanding in either category he is solid and reliable in both. my feeling is that baker and smith are big additions to our underachievers in the TE category and watson or thomas (or both) could easily be outplayed. smith is a pretty nice athlete too, i would say he has easily been better than thomas, and more consistent than watson
