Pats begin 2009 Training Camp

Post#1 » by magicfan4life05 » Thu Jul 30, 2009 4:07 pm

According to Jason La Confora of the NFL Network,

the Pats will be "preparing for a tough camp in New England"

The consensus is it will be more physical, "there will be more 2 a days" and "it will be harder" and "they are getting ready for a hard core training camp"

You can see that video:

Today was the first day of Training Camp and practices, and Mike Reiss has the lowdown:

http://www.boston.com/sports/football/p ... ss_pieces/

Day 1, first Patriots practice

FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots held their first practice of training camp this morning (9:30-10:45). The team was in full pads and worked on the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium. Heavy rain and lightning ended the session about a half-hour earlier than scheduled.

Here are a few observations that stood out from the session:

# 1) Defensive flexibility. Flexibility is one of the buzzwords of a Bill Belichick defense, and we saw the unit line up in a standard 3-4 but also work some four-man line. This has been commonplace, as the Patriots are a "multiple" defense. One of the first thoughts I had when I saw this was how the Patriots – now in Belichick’s 10th year – have a considerable head start over other NFL teams with new head coaches. This system has been in place, the veteran players know it, and it provides more opportunities to tweak schemes -- even on the first day of training camp. Rookie Ron Brace was right in the mix in the four-man line work.

# 2) Jonathan Wilhite stepping up at cornerback. With veteran Shawn Springs not on the field, second-year player Jonathan Wilhite stepped into his left cornerback spot. Wilhite had an interception of quarterback Kevin O’Connell over the middle. Earlier in practice, safety Brandon Meriweather picked off a tipped O’Connell pass that was intended for receiver Shun White.

# 3) Tight ends and their role in the offense. When the Patriots worked their 9-on-7 inside running drill, tight ends spent time in the offensive backfield in a lead-blocking role. This was expected with no pure fullback on the roster -- Heath Evans signing with the Saints in free agency – and it led to the following thought: When a team has versatile tight ends, it provides an offense with more options, and can stress a defense in the matchup game.

# 4) Big applause for Tom Brady. While rookie free agent quarterback Brian Hoyer was the first player on the field, it came as no surprise that Tom Brady drew the loudest applause upon his arrival. Wearing a black brace over his left knee – the brace was visible as it extended from under his jersey pants – Brady waved his left arm toward the crowd of several thousand as he jogged from one drill to an open area of the field.

# 5) Jerod Mayo & Brandon Meriweather follow-up. In spring minicamps and organized team activities, linebacker Jerod Mayo and safety Brandon Meriweather were held out of on-field work. At the time, the question was: Are they injured and should there be concern? Now we have the answer, as they were both on the field this morning with a clean bill of health.

Brady practicing as Patriots camp opens

There was a time, early this offseason, when the recovery of Tom Brady seemed like it would be the biggest story in the NFL as we approached the season.

Now he's fully practicing on the first day of training camp and it barely makes a ripple. (Okay, the news comes from Sportscenter so its making a small ripple.)

The lack of fanfare is partially by design; the Patriots have treated his recovery in the same "nothing to see here" manner that they treat most injuries.

But it's also because his recovery has gone smoother than anyone expected when there were fresh memories of infections and follow up surgeries.

While Brady is healthy and happy at camp, not all of his teammates are.

No movement in Wilfork contract talks:

Defensive tackle Vince Wilfork showed up to camp on time, true to his word, but his agent isn't happy with his lack of a contract extension.

"Our desire was, and is, a commitment to Vince that equals the one he has made to the organization," agent Kennard McGuire said. "Today, we're just not there. For a man who is as passionate to the game as Vince Wilfork is, I truly feel this is unjust.''

While Wilfork is disappointed, there doesn't appear to be much he can do right now. Both sides won't discuss where the contract negotiations are, but the Patriots hold the cards.

If Wilfork made it to 2010 without a new contract, it seems likely the Patriots would retain his services with the franchise tag.

^^ thanks cc im so excited the nfl season is almost here

we didn't get to see the encore performance following the historic 50 td 8 int season by Brady, so I'm hoping this season he picks up where he left off.... :D

(obviously he will have to get the rust off and get back in the swing of things)

If Brady and the rest of the team can stay healthy, I think offense will be special once again.

Keep in mind, in 2007 they were the most prolific offense in nfl history....with it being only the first year for moss and welker in this system .

Now that they've gotten used to it for the last couple of seasons, I'm hoping for some great things if everyone can remain healthy.

*knock on wood*

Day 2, first Patriots practice

FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots held their morning practice (9:30-11:15) in full pads on the upper practice fields behind Gillette Stadium.

Here were some observations that stood out:

# 1) Too many footballs on the ground. The overall ball-handling was sloppy, with rookie receiver Julian Edelman dropping back-to-back punts and another pass, receiver Greg Lewis dropping a long bomb in breakdown work, and receiver Wes Welker unable to corral a catchable ball in 11-on-11 work. This was a tough overall practice in the ball-handling area for Edelman, a college quarterback who probably doesn’t have a lot of experience returning punts.

# 2) Busy stretch for training staff, but nothing serious. At one point in practice, rookie offensive lineman George Bussey and veteran offensive lineman Russ Hochstein were looked at by members of the training staff. Bussey had the brace on his left knee removed while trainers worked on the leg, while trainers seemed to be looking inside Hochstein’s helmet. Both players missed a little bit of action before returning to practice. As the Patriots practice in full pads, and increase the level of contact, it’s a reminder of how physical football can be.

# 3) Tackling drill is introduced. The Patriots worked on tackling for the first time, with one offensive player running toward one defensive player in an area boxed off by four orange cones. One purpose of the drill is for defenders to use the proper tackling technique, which can be tough against some of the Patriots’ quick offensive players. Defenders were allowed to bring offensive players to the ground, a sign that the contact is increasing in camp. Defensive back Herana-Daze Jones had a nice arm tackle of Julian Edelman.

# 4) Lots of special teams work. Those who attend a Patriots training camp practice will notice that the Patriots spend a lot of time on special teams work. Punt coverage was on the practice itinerary this morning. Some players who spend extra time on special teams in breakdown work include Terrence Wheatley, Matthew Slater, Mike Richardson, Terrence Nunn, Herana-Daze Jones, Patrick Chung, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Vinny Ciurciu.

# 5) Combination blocks with tight ends. One of the breakdown drills in this morning’s practice was for tight ends working together on combination blocks. In turn, an outside linebacker and safety worked on the opposite side, attempting to set the edge. This was a good chance to not only watch the depth and skill of the Patriots’ tight ends, but also to see how first-year position coaches Josh Boyer (defensive backs) and Shane Waldron (tight ends) are drilling the players. The Patriots do a nice job developing young coaches, and it was clear that both Boyer and Waldron – also working with linebackers coach Matt Patricia – are taking a hands-on, detail-oriented approach.

I'm just hoping everyone is healthy. Lots of injuries started up in training camp last year and led into the season. We can't have that again.

I really like the Joey Galloway signing. He may not be what he once was, but hes a legit wide out who will allow Welker to go back in to the slot where he is comfortable.

Patriots make a couple moves.

They cut Mike Richardson
Injuries hurt this kid

They trade Le Kevin Smith for a 2010 5th rounder
http://www.boston.com/sports/football/p ... triot.html
I'll miss Le Kevin, just for the sake of his saying his name.

They sign RB Chris Taylor, formerly of the Texans
http://www.boston.com/sports/football/p ... _tayl.html
I'm not sure on this. Could be just another back in camp.

Patriots make a couple more moves:

Trade Hochstein to the Broncos for another late round pick
http://www.boston.com/sports/football/p ... ots_6.html

- I'm fine with that. It shows us even more, how much they are loving Sebastian Vollmer. I was surprised to find out that Hochstein has been with us since 02! I thought he came here only a few years ago. This also, in my mind, dismisses the rumor of BB and McDaniels on the outs. There were rumors that because McDaniels was signing patriots guys, such as lonnie paxton, that they were getting in a rivalry. But if BB is gonna deal two of his guys to Denver, I would doubt they have any ill feelings toward each other.

Another move, patriots sign rookie Tyrone Mckenzie. This was the guy who tore his acl early I believe.

They also released Tank Williams. Too bad, I liked the idea of him last year, then he got hurt. And when we drafted chung and players like guyton stepped up, ya had to know tank was on his way out.

I don't want the rumored cut of bruschi to go down. So all these subtractions from the team are fine with me.

Return to New England Patriots
