Re: Do you still want to suck?
Charlotte is without a doubt worse. Spurs and Rockets, yes. Jazz probably. Wouldn't count out the Magic being worse at all. Same with OKC. Could also see the Blazers failing miserably if Dame gets injured again.
We also know we won't tank while other teams will. We very well might be in that spot of sucking but still trying like Sacramento has for some time. We could also be the worst team in the league of course.

Re: Do you still want to suck?
As stated by others, I don't think we need to make any moves to make sure we have another high lottery pick. I'd prefer to lock up Myles long term, but that probably doesn't make business sense for him or us. I think he and Hield have value and can net us future assets. I do think it's useful to have good vets in the locker room and on the court kind of acting as coaches on the floor when the team is quite young like ours. I think that McConnell and Theis are guys that likely don't have much of a market for trade anyway and can serve that role for us. A winning culture doesn't necessarily mean winning games. It's more about knowing how to compete and play hard. We can still lose plenty, but not get blown out and embarrassed like OKC likes to do after the all star break when everybody sits.

Re: Do you still want to suck?
I'd happily move Theis and Hield to open up playing time but the tricky part could be finding a team that has more expensive contracts to send back. we sure don't need to shed dollars. so far only Westbrook has been the big contract guy mentioned in rumors.

Hield was surprisingly good last year and surprisingly nothing tonight. I don't think we need him.

Re: Do you still want to suck?
Do we still want to suck ? I don’t think the choice is ours. The rest of the league will decide our fate for us as most teams have better personnel.
Our players are still too NBA young/inexperienced to win enough games. Give us 1-2 years with the right moves and experience gained and we’ll be playoff competitive again if our youth become starter caliber stars.
I watched a ton of NBA games last season covering all the teams. The biggest things that stood out to me that hurt us are the following:
Lack of sensible offense- most teams have better plays period. Rick has to improve his offense and implement more this season.
Lack of Defense- the biggest reason we didn’t win games is we couldn’t outperform opponents by limiting their offense. I see that as our weakness again this season.
Lack of a STUD player or players - most teams have at least one or 2 difference makers. Yes small market syndrome until we get a superstar again to build around. We have nobody who can dominate. No Reggie, no Jermaine, no Paul G. and so on. Truly I hope either Haliburton or Mathurin becomes that person until we get a legit STUD.
On court leader was weak - Hopefully Haliburton acquisition will remedy this and return of McConnell to second team will be our offense initiators. Bye glass Brogdon.
Talent- we’re VERY young. We lack NBA experience. We lack 3-6 strong veterans like most teams possess. This happens with trading away veterans acquiring youth and building through the draft as route we chose. Currently too many role players who need to develop and mature into veterans if they’re able to.
Inexperienced playing together - it was a pieced together lineup due to injuries and trades last year so
they gained very little court time together. Hoping this season that players develop chemistry team wide.
Roster makeup- was atrocious due to injuries and trades leaving us with too many guards. Hopefully we shore up 3-5 positions in upcoming year to balance out the roster flexibility.
Multiple injuries played a big part - Huge losing McConnell and Duarte early on, Goga useless early on, glass Brogdon, Turner’s foot, and some Covid issues lumped in made for jumbled lineups all season.
In summary even if the Pacers make big strides this year (which we all expect) I still don’t believe we can close the (talent to win) gap enough to be playoff relevant until next season or the following year.
As our youth and coaching matures hopefully our acquired players with huge upsides becomes a reality. Then we’ll be looking at great basketball all season long.

I agree we don’t need him. Quinn noted early in the game last night that Hield was struggling with being on the Pacers (what’s his role and do objectives of the team match with his?). No better than he looked last night how do we rationalize playing him over young guys?

I think the problem last year besides injuries - and they were conservative with injuries once it became obvious that we were headed for the lottery - was the lack of another gear for the final 4 minutes. we lost all the close games when the other team turned it up and we had no answer.

Absolutely we lost a lot of close games because our defense couldn’t close out a game and our offense wasn’t good enough to run away from the competition.

This is why I like him. He can stroke it. If he controls his shot selection and urge to throw up too deep of 3’s then he’s a scorer who can keep the defense honest and create spacing.

That’s how it looked last night. A lot depends on how big a step Hali takes. He could elevate others and the results (on offense could be pretty good). Not sure even Myles will keep us from being pretty bad on defense. It will be interesting to see how minutes are distributed. Liberal use of the bench will result in more losses but, we have a lot of guys to develop/evaluate.

No, I thought about it, because it's new, exciting, submissive, but now I firmly advise everyone against sucking.
What I do want to do, is trade all our players older than 25 and take first position for the draft lottery for the right Victor this time.

I keep Turner. If we get Vic, Turner can walk. Otherwise, we draft a forward and pay Turner.Pacersike wrote:No, I thought about it, because it's new, exciting, submissive, but now I firmly advise everyone against sucking.

Knowing Myles, he probably will sulk every year of his new contract because he didn't get the 1 million more he asked for.
