It’s a really good chance for him. And good money. He earned it too. For a guy that was put in a very difficult spot having an option turned down SO EARLY, he worked his butt off and earned multiple multi year contracts in the nba, at good money to boot.

Any idea yet how they've signed him? They are over the cap,.. so, I would have to guess that they are taking him into their MLE?... (hasn't been filed yet with the league, so spotrac doesn't have method identified yet?) If it's true that they are taking him under their MLE,.. then they would be hard capped at the first apron, with Buzelis still to sign? Probably means that they don't intend to resign DeMar?.... they would only have around 16M under the hardcap to sign him?... 21M if they don't sign Buzelis?

Edit: I guess that really isn't a surprise,... they've been sending those signals for at least a month?...

I wouldn't have been surprised if he'd gotten closer to the full MLE

I think that's a good deal for both sides - Smith has an opportunity to be a bigger rotation piece for them (who knows what will happen w/ Vucevic) and the Bulls grab a younger guy who still has potential to improve, they are moving toward a youth movement it seems (finally)

Spotrac guesses contract structure until it’s actually filed with the league. All these signings can’t be filed until July 6th, so it’s all guesses how. And still up in the air and can be re arranged until it’s filed.

Really great deductions here that I agree with. This was one of the first things I texted a bud. It likely is the MLE which hard caps them at the first apron. It COULD be arranged into Indy sign and trading him away where Chicago could keep their MLE available, but they would still be hard capped by receiving a player via sign and trade. In that case, Indy could get a small TPE out of it, too, and Chicago could either send a salary to Indy, OR, it could be a multi team trade arranged where Chicago signs and traded someone they’re losing in free agency elsewhere and takes Jalen back in via that trade. Like, if Chicago loses DDR to LA on an MLE sized contract, they could sign and trade him to LA and take back Jalen using DDR as salary matching, which benefits Chicago by keeping their MLE available.

Lots of cards in the air until they're filed.

I think that the team sent him a message by barely playing him in the playoffs...
He seems like a good kid and I hope that this works out for him.

  - I was thinking the same thing,... So, I checked the salaries in the Caruso/Giddey trade. They are all within the boundaries of the same trade exceptions,.. so,.. they could roll those trades together, if there was any benefit from it? They might have to create a 'touch' between Indy & OKC to do that,... but that wouldn't take much. :D

Still feels like whatever is on the stove is still cooking,... :dontknow:

The Giddey/Caruso deal is already done with the league. Can't wrap that in, but we'll find other options here in the next couple days.
