This link from TrueHoop has an interview with Walsh where he says that Larry Bird has been handling most of the basketball operations, but that he (Walsh) made the Artest and Jackson trades. Perhaps this will set some of your minds at ease.

DD wasn't worth a MLE that yr either.

I can't blame Bird too much for Sarunas, as there were 3-4 teams after him too, & he was regarded as the best european player that year. I think a lot of people missed on him - or just as likely, Sarunas failed to live up to his own potentiel, & Larry (nor others) can btruely be blamed for that!
As for the link above on Donnie:
Good find/ post. This is the first I've heard either Donnie or Larry "take the credit/ blame for either move. Kinda sounds like Donnie clearing the path for Larry a bit by giving him a clean slate, & removing any ill-conceived predispositions towards Larry. If so, yet another class move by a class guy.
