By no means do I think that Shawne is a bust....he's just stupid. The fact that he is getting minutes as a rotational player on a team that already has 2 Starting quality SFs playing ahead of him is enough for me to think that he still has a career ( at worst as a Backup SF ) as an NBA player.

I have no doubt that IF he wasn't stuck behind Granger at the SF spot that he wouldn't be starting for us now. This doesn't mean that I think that we should keep him at all costs....it just means that I think that if he was a bust....he would have been cut by now.

I get what you are saying, I just disagree. I think Shawne is a bust, and bad decisions or not I don't see him being a very good NBA player. Some of that is due to his stupidity, but even if he completely turned himself around I can't see his ceiling being very high. If his ceiling was Tmac or Granger (if he turned things around and worked hard) I don't think many people would want him out despite this latest episode.

Before this last incident....which I truly believe would have been a minor PR incident IF he was on any other team.....

Great point. If this was happening in LA/NY/CHI etc. it wouldnt even make the sports headlines. I dont really care if Bird trades Shawn, I just dont want average to below average players in return. I would much rather keep, and at the worst let him walk as an unrestricted when the time is up

The signing of Elton Brand has left Philadelphia with a bit of a logjam at power forward. With Brand, who has averaged 38.3 minutes in his career, expected to log heavy minutes at the position, incumbents Reggie Evans and Jason Smith will be fighting for the backup minutes.

If Sixers GM Ed Stefanski is looking to trade one (and there have been no indications that he is), Smith has value. The 6-10, 240-pound forward averaged 15.6 points and 8.0 rebounds in a superb summer league. Several scouts were impressed by Smith's improved ability to knock down the mid-range jump shot with regularity.

"He's a starter in this league," an Eastern Conference scout said. "No question."

Smith will make $1.3 million this season, and with team options at $1.4 and $2.2 million the following two years, he is one of the league's best bargains.

This says it all right here - it's even IN the article - there have been no indications that he is. If Stefanski isn't looking to trade Smith, he's not going to deal him for a pair of 2nd rounders or someone like Graham or McRoberts, who are just as likely to get waived as they are to get traded, since Bird has 16 guys under contract. And with Shawne's off the court issues, his trade value is at an all-time low.

FYI Philly fans see Smith as a sort of pick & pop big man (think Okur). He will probably play some back-up center (like Troy Murphy) but that is not his best position. He's a pretty good shooter & plays hard. Nice complementary rotation player with potential to be a starter.

We would never take Shawne, the Sixers have been putting a huge emphasis on character the last couple of seasons since the Iverson/Webber fiasco.
