What's the rotation?

Post#1 » by floppymoose » Sun Aug 3, 2008 12:38 am

I haven't checked in on the Pacers for a while.

Who is playing what position, and for how many minutes per game? I'm asking for best guesses here.

hard to tell until we see the rookies. Ford and Jack should get most of the minutes at point with Diener filling in for injuries and maybe being an energy guy particularly if Jack can play some two. Granger and Dunleavy will take most of the wing minutes with Rush pushing Quis and Shawne for the backup spot hard. Rasho, Murph, and Foster should get most of the 4/5 minutes unless Hibbert surprises. I think they'll bring Hibbert along slowly knowing that both Rasho and Foster have contracts that can be allowed to expire next summer if Hibbert is ready for more time next year.

Tinsley does not figure in the plans. Graham, McBob, and Maceo will probably be inactive much of the year.

At this early juncture, I'd guess something like: Ford, Dunleavy, Granger, Murphy, Rasho as the starters, with Foster, Jack, Rush, and Hibbert getting the bulk of the reserve minutes.

I envision a 9 man rotation:

PG - Ford 28 mpg
SG - Dunleavy 36 mpg
SF - Granger 38 mpg
PF - Murphy 30 mpg
C - Rasho 25 mpg

6th Man - Jack 26 mpg ( split 20/6 between the PG/SG spots )
7th Man / 1st Big Man off the Bench - Foster 25 mpg ( split between the PF/C rotation....depending on who else in the floor with him )

The remaining minutes at the 8th and 9th Man off the bench:

8 mpg at the SG
10 mpg at the SF
16 mpg at the PF/C rotation

will be divided among Shawne/Rush/Marquis ( at the SG/SF rotation with a total of 18 mpg ) and Hibbert/Baston ( at the PF/C rotation with a total of 16 mpg ).

My hope is that Rush and Hibbert get the majority of the remaining minutes as the 8th and 9th man off the bench....but I'm guessing that who gets the minutes depend on who we play, how we are doing and any matchup advantages that we can use to our advantage.

CableKC seems fairly close I think. I don't see the point guard duties being so split down the middle though. Jack is no Jose Calderon, Ford will easily take the lion's share of the point guard minutes. Probably 33 or so, leaving 10-15 for Jack, and whatever's left over for ballboy.

We're really stacked at SG and SF - there's just not enough minutes to go around. Are there any so-so PF's with expiring contracts available that we could swap Quis for?

I'd like to see something similar to Cable's idea. Looks about right

I'd do it. I'm not sure if the Nets would though, Here's their current roster break-down....

Point Guards
Devin Harris
Keyon Dooling

Shooting Guards
Vince Carter
Maurice Ager
Chris Douglas-Roberts

Small Forwards
Bobby Simmons
Trenton Hassell
Eduardo Najera
Jarvis Hayes

Power Forwards
Yi Jianlian
Sean Williams
Ryan Anderson

Centers
Brook Lopez
Josh Boone
Stromile Swift

They're pretty stacked at the wings as well, although their crop of SFs are pretty mediocre. If they bought into the idea that Quis could play third string PG, they might go for it.

Unless some team is stacked at the Frontcourt positions that has Expiring contracts that are in need of some backcourt depth....I can't think of any.

Realistically....I don't think that we will be able to trade an Expiring Contract for another. The only trade that I think that we will make would be one where we get back a player with 2 years left on their contract but with a smaller yearly salary.

You know as well as I do that Marquis isn't really a PG....he's more of a SG/SF that isn't a complete defensive liability that's a pretty good scorer insid the paint.

My take at the rotation:

PG (48 mins): Ford 28, Jack 16, Diener 4
SG/SF (96 mins): Granger 36, Dunleavy 36, Rush 20, Jack 4
PF/C (96 mins): Murphy 32, Foster 24, Rasho 24, Hibbert 16

That's basically a 9-man rotation with Diener getting a taste as the 10th guy.

I'm assuming Tinsley's gone...I can't guess as to who we'd get back in a trade, so for simplicity's sake, I'm assuming a buyout.

That leaves Williams, Daniels, Baston, Graham, and McBob. If everyone's healthy, I'd assume Graham and McBob will be on the inactive list, while Daniels will probably be active, but the odd man out in the wing rotation (assuming Rush is ready to contribute). Williams and Baston will bouce back and forth between active and inactive depending on injuries and matchups.

Of the guys in that last five, I would think that neither Graham nor McBob have much of a shot at cracking the rotation, barring a significant injury. Baston probably doesn't either, but as mentioned in the "surprise" thread, he does have skills and experience that could get him some burn if we're looking to win now. The same is true for Marquis Daniels. If Daniels or Baston play significant minutes, it's probably a bad thing, because it means that one or both of our rookies probably aren't getting play (due to injury or inability to earn it), or that something's gone wrong with one of our core players (again, injury or poor play).

Williams is the one guy that I have out of the rotation who could earn time, and it be a good story. In my mind, it would have to be at the 4, where he might squeeze some minutes due to good play, but I'm not holding my breath.

And, upon further consideration, I think I might go with clockwise.

I feel your pain. Youth sports has turned into a monster. I can't even believe how uber-organized it has become, and at what young ages kids play on competitive teams with extensive traveling schedules. My two kids have played in tournaments not only all across Missouri but also in Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and Tennessee, and my older one is just now starting high school this fall. It's crazy. Also expensive and a huge time commitment. Yeah, it's fun too. But I kinda miss the simpler times of my own youth. They tell me that's the tell-tale sign of becoming a grouchy old fart.

Pacers' rotation:

C: Foster and Rasho will split the minutes in some fashion. Hibbert will ride the pine, at least for the first half of the season, unless one of those guys gets hurt.

PF: Murphy's by default. If we go big, Foster could see time here. I can also see us going with no power forward at all sometimes, using three wing players together instead--some combination of Granger/Dunleavy/Rush/Daniels/Williams, with Granger and/or Williams being the in-name-only power forward.

SF: Granger will get most of the minutes here. When he needs a rest, we'll slide Dunleavy over, or go with Williams. It will be interesting too to see if Graham can get any PT; sounds like he's a hard worker who O'Brien might look to reward.

SG: Dunleavy will get most of the minutes; Rush and Daniels will fight it out for the backup minutes. Maybe Rush will come on strong over the second half of the season.

PG: Ford starts, Jack backs up. WOO-HOO, STABILITY AT THE POINT!!!! Unless someone gets hurt, at which point I will have to bang my head on a hard, unforgiving object.
