Does Iggy's contract set the market for Danny?

Post#1 » by greenway84 » Wed Aug 20, 2008 8:56 pm

The Pacers can extend the contract of forward Danny Granger anytime between now and the end of October, and it appears as though he could receive a deal similar to the one the 76ers gave Andre Iguodala, according to The Indianapolis Star.....

Wow...this whole thing is really misleading. The headline on RealGM isn't accurately representing the article. Here's the pertinent quote:

Mike Wells wrote:What type of contract do you think the Pacers should offer Granger?

Here's a look at several contracts players signed over the summer.

--Andrew Bogut: five years, $60 million

--Andre Iguodala: six years, $80 million

--Emeka Okafor: six years, $72 million

--Josh Smith: five years, $58 million

--Monta Ellis: six years, $67 million

I recently asked a league official what type of deal Granger should get. He threw him in the same category as Iguodala.

Iguodala and Granger, who play a similar style, put up similar numbers last season.

Though I'd rate Iguodala slightly ahead of Danny based on defense and passing, I don't think there's a huge amount of difference between the two. While I think the $13.3mm annual average for Iggy is too high for Danny, I also think it's too high for Iggy. Both players should be around $12, but I expect Danny to land somewhere between the Josh Smith/Monta Ellis figures and the Iggy figure.

So, to reiterate, no one is saying that Danny will get Iggy-type numbers, they are simply speculating and comparing him. It's a relatively fair comparison.
I have no idea what you're talking about, and clearly, neither do you.

Agreed. I think it was too much for Iggy as well. I think Smith, and Mota are about the range I want to see Granger in. Also I would love to have Josh Smith at PF for us. Ford/Rush/Granger/Smith/Hibbert = SICK!

I think a contract like Josh Smith is a decent one for five years. However, if Danny's gonna get a 6 year extension, somewhere within the 65 mil is just right. Well, like Monta's.

Anyways, I always thought Iggy and Granger are on the same level. The only difference i see is a handful of highlight reels from Iggy. But overall, Danny's just as effective. I'd say Danny's got a little more of a complete game than Iggy. my fingers are crossed, wishin Danny would be an all-star this year.

I would say that while a contract on the level of Iggy is to much for Danny, if that is what it took, then we would HAVE to pay up... We would have to, IMO... The fan base, what is left, would be outraged if Danny were to be playing for another team... He is the brightest thing that the Pacers have... But I would be happy if he got a deal in the range of a Monta Ellis and Josh Smith...

count55.....can you change the title of this thread to "Granger MAY get Iggy sized Contract"?

This title is misleading since Granger isn't ( for now ) "getting" anything.

Luol Deng also got an extension this offseason at 6 year $71 million for an average of almost $12 million a year. I believe he and Iggy both signed about the same deal with the ability to earn an additional $9-12 million in incentives. Iggy's appear easier to earn than Deng's though.

I think all these guys are averaging around $11-13 million a year. Honestly, those numbers are close enough that if he gets an extension anywhere in that range, I'd be more than happy. The market's been more than helpful in setting the market for Granger with multiple examples.

Between Deng and Iggy, I'd say the market rate has been established.

$13 million a year for Granger is OK by me. He is already a near All-Star, and should be just entering his prime. So I think he's a good bet to actually be worth that much money.

Not sure I'd ever be comfortable with the Pacers giving out another $20+ million contract, though. Big difference between that and $13 million. For $20+ million a year, you'd better be getting a perennial league MVP candidate.

Max contracts are driven by years in the NBA. Granger will not be eligible for a $20 mil first year contract. Lebron's Max deal was for $14.4 in the first year. So next years' Max deals will likely start at around $15 mil.

^ Yes, I realize that.

I was comparing Granger's situation to the Jermaine O"Neal situation. In Granger's case, I think he is worth the money we are talking about--not because Granger is better than O"Neal, but because the money amount is significantly less.

My apologies, I wasn't very clear in trying to make my point.

I would think Danny Granger would be able to live up to a 6 year 70-75 million dollar contract assuming that he continues to avoid health problems and his development as a passer improves. I would be offering him around a 5 year 55 million dollar extention now and if he doesn't want to sign now then go with the 6 year 70 million dollar offer next summer. If he can get his assists up into the 3.5 a game range this season i'd give him the 6 year 75 million dollar option.

He is clearly heading towards being one of the best SF's in the league what sets apart the great ones from the good ones in the ability to have an offense run through them where they use their talents to create easy baskets for others.

With the drafting of Brandon Rush who really is an off the ball player offensively its important that Granger can develop further at breaking down defenses off the dribble to create for others as well as himself.

With Dunleavy its not really an issue because he is a very good passer and ball handler but I wonder if they intend to keep that duo together longterm or not as they don't make for the worlds greatest defensive unit.
