Why does Jack get soo many minutes?
This is an honest question. I was watching yesterdays game and he was horrible and he still got mins. Does he have that much respect from the coach? Is he that good? I've seen like 20 Pacer games this year and I have noticed the same thing.

Because...he's an upgrade over Travis Diener.
I heard that coach likes vets over rookies in this stretch to make the playoffs. I think that we, as rookies, need to take this stint on the bench and learn from the vets. I really have learned a lot about passing from Rasho

Rest in Peace, Pacerfan

And not much of a downgrade from TJ Ford.

Not sure which 20 games you saw, but it's not the 20 games I saw. I'm a big fan of TJ Ford but his main problem is inconsistency. When Ford is on his game, he's way better then Jack. However, when he's not, Ford is almost useless on the court. That's where Jack comes in. Jack is a very consistent player. You know each and every night what you're going to get from Jack. He won't "wow" you but he also won't be terrible. Last night however, was a rare game for him because he was terrible, and against the Spurs he was pretty bad too. But other then those 2 games, i don't remember any other games in January where he struggled. Even his 0-6 shooting night i thought he did good, he was passing well and played very good defense. He's only had a handful of bad games in December as well.
He's a very good free throw shooter and plays hard defense. I think Jim O'Brien really respects that. And like i said, with Ford, you have no idea what you will get. Jack you know what you're going to get. Jack is the perfect backup PG on a contender i think, in Indiana i think he's just being used.

I think in addition to coaches, the players also know what they're going to get from Jack more so than Ford. They don't wonder as much whether the point is going to get them the ball or if they should be waiting in the paint to catch a rebound off the PG shot attempt.

Very well said. Ford looks like an All-Star one game, then he looks like he belongs in the NBDL the next. Jack is usually consistant and even when hes off on offense, he makes up for it with his defense.

Re: Why does Jack get soo many minutes?
Very good answers in here. TJ has pretty much completely fallen out of favor with me (not that it means a damn thing), meanwhile Double-J plays his rear end off every game. I'll take his effort and drive over TJ's occasional glimpse of being a top-notch PG (offensively, because he plays horrible defense).
I'd also like to know what 20 games the thread starter has watched also. I know JJ's had some rough outings but I think you'd be hard-pressed to find even 10 games where he has just look downright horrible.

Great Ford > Great Jack by a good ammount
Good Ford > Good Jack by a little bit
Neutral Jack > Neutral Ford by a little bit
Bad Jack > Bad Ford by a truckload super ton.
For hits Great and Bad more than Jack does.

Maybe Bird took some advice from his mechanic who told him, "When you have an unreliable Ford, you gotta have a good Jack!!!"

It's not eloquent

"If Jack makes that shot, the game is over." - Tommy Heinsohn after Jarrett Jack missed a shot at the buzzer of a 105-105 game between the Celtics and Pacers.

Re: Why does Jack get soo many minutes?
All of our point guards have their strengths.
T.J. is fast, can score, gets a lot of assists, but he's streaky
Jack can defend elite guards, is big, plays well with TJ
Travis doesn't turn the ball over, shoots at an okay level when he gets in rhythm, can't defend elite guards.
Jack plays so much because T.J. can't play 48 minutes, he just can't.

His defense and his propensity to knock down clutch free throws is why he plays so often at the end of games. That makes up for his occasional brain fart turnover.

I think the point guard tandem is good. They are almost opposite point guards, but they're getting to a point where they are covering up each other's deficiencies. If a team adjusts to TJ, with hit them with JJ.

Re: Why does Jack get soo many minutes?
Well, I was a staunch supporter of Jack over Ford, but even Jack has made me look foolish over the last few games. I still think Jack is a safer bet for the future, though.
When T.J. gets healthy, he'll be back in the SL. I'm very excited to see what a fully healthy Ford, Junior, and Danny can do. I do like T.J. off the bench though. We're gonna miss that production, unless Quis comes back 100% as well.
