How about Ime Udoka?

Post#1 » by laydo » Mon Jul 13, 2009 1:06 pm

It seem's that the Pacers aren't going to match the offer for Jack. And the roster is like this:

PG: Ford, Diener, Price
SG: Rush, Jones
SF: Granger, Dunleavy
PF: Murphy, Hansbrough, McRoberts
C: Hibbert, Foster

Even though we sign both A.J. and McBob, the wings and the backcourt are still not strong enough. All the three point guards are too short to play SG, and since Dunleavy will sit for a while, that leaves no option for Danny, Brandon, and Dahntay but to stay healthy and play consistent.

Ideally, we should trade Tinsley to OKC for Atkins and Wilkins, who are not in the future of the Thunders. But that just say it's never going to happen.

So, how about Ime Udoka? He is not athletic but knows how to play defense. He could play the three perimeter spots just like Maquis Daniels, which is a perfect fit for the Pacers' roster, now. He also have lots of experience which can help the young Pacers. And He could be signed by a smaller contract than Jarrett or Marquis or even Dahntay did, such as 8 million for 3 years.

I think that Daniels could be a better option. He is more athletic, familiar with the system and quite versatile. Can we make the contract $$ work?

I wouldn't be opposed to Udoka simply for the fact that he would be of use to us, and he would be really cheap (as in probably the veteran's minimum). He can shoot the 3 pretty well and he plays good defense.

I'd be fine with adding Udoka.

Looking at our prospective roster...

...the Pacers still have three needs: a 2-3 swingman, an emergency center, and a more viable backup pg. Udoka would fill the first of those, probably about as well as anyone else that the Pacers could afford to pay, although if we can find one, I'd rather find a swingman who is more of a scorer--I see Udoka and Jones as somewhat redundant.

However, I think the team's biggest remaining need is a more confidence-inspiring backup pg. Nothing against Diener, but he is simply a guy you can only play in spot minutes, in certain situations--he just is too much of a matchup liability in too many situations against too many opposing pgs. And Price is a rookie late-second-round pick--just making the team is really as much as we have any right to expect from him at this point.

I do think adding a swingman is more important than adding a third-string center, although it would be nice to have a little more depth in our frontcourt.

Add Anthony Carter and Udoka. And keep sellin' us fans on the "three year plan." That's the ticket for the Larry Bird GM 2009 Summer Tour.
