Win Now Point Guard
bird wants to win now, and we have no point guard... so who do we make a move for?
probably a veteran... from a team looking to clear some cap room... who fits the bill?

no way on arenas. when's the last time he played a significant amount of a season? and he has a max contract. and he's never shown to be an nba winner. gotta remember bird is trying to not get fired.

if bird leaves, do you think the next gm would consider that? i'd love to see mel mel the abuser back in some blue and gold.

Tinsley, Jackson, and Artest simply are not ever going to be back in Pacers blue and gold, and we have only those players to blame.
There is such a thing as burning a bridge and pouring salt into the ground in the NBA. Those guys did it, with their actions and their words.

Re: Win Now Point Guard
A win now pg? Ummm how many "win now pg's are there in the league? 5, maybe 10? I mean even if you somehow got Chris Paul for free and had to give up no one how many games would this team win? 45? 48?
Now back to reality, if we were to get a guy like that we would almost certainly have to give up Granger and a guy like Hansbrough or George. I mean we could conceivably get a guy like Parker for less only to see him walk in free agency in a year, and are you really any better for that? Odds are we will have to be patient and sign some type of veteran to a 2-4 million dollar contract, win 30-40 games next season and hope we find our savior in the draft.

Re: Win Now Point Guard
win now doesn't mean first team all star. it just means someone who deserves to start on a playoff team. there should be more like 16 of those. 5 is the number of players that deserve to play in the all star game. we don't need to hold out for someone that good.
I think Sessions or Hinrich (yes, there is a trade in the works for him but it can't be consumated until the 8th which gives us a couple of weeks to try and make it a three way deal) would do. there are probably others. time to look at the free agent list although we don't want to get into the bidding until the big name guys find their new homes.

Re: Win Now Point Guard
nene & lawson - I dont see anything we have that Denever wants, but Lawson would be ok.
diaw & augustin - If Im dealing with Charlotte its for Felton and Im not taking Diaw in the process
jason kidd - Too old, and we dont have anything for him
monta ellis - Mixed feelings about, but we would have to overpay and Im not sold on him being a PG
collison & a contract - One of my favorite options right here
mcdyess & hill - My #1 choice even though I dont like Indiana natives. Possible we get him
calderon - id rather just stick with TJ for the season
jack - yes but only on the cheap
hinrich - no, hes overpaid and I dont think hes the answer
sessions - hes ok but I wouldnt give up much for him, maybe TJ, right to Magnum
flynn - I think he could be a good option but not sure what we would have to give to get him

we have expiring contracts... those are basically our assets. charlotte wouldn't need to trade felton for an expiring contract... they could just not re-sign him, and wallah - cap space. we HAVE TO take back a contract that another team doesn't want. if it's not the pg's contract, then it'll be another player's. another team will basically pay us to take somebody. can same them a lot of money. do we need diaw or mcdyess? not really, but probably wouldn't hurt to have them as an option. but i'll sure take their contract for a year or two if it brings in a pg. and the whole reason we'd be able to get kidd is because he's "too old." the mavericks have other options and might prefer the extra cap relief next summer. meanwhile, kidd might buy us enough time to figure out something long term at pg.
i just listed deals i thought were in the realm of possibility... not really an augustin, kidd, collison, calderon, hinrich, or flynn fan...

Baron Davis is available for the right price. I would do a Baron for Ford/D. Jones swap. Or maybe Kaman/Baron for Ford/Murphy/future protected first.

Baron ain't worth a cheeseburger. Actually he is a cheeseburger, a $41,850,000 cheeseburger. People say he weighs 260 now.

Re: Win Now Point Guard
Not sure if he qualifies for a "win now" option, but considering Memphis' recent draft selections Mike Conley would probably be available. He's probably best within our range of options ie not using too many pieces right now.

Re: Win Now Point Guard
Yeah I don't think there really ARE a ton of guys who are 'win now.' Parker is the obvious one. But most guys fit somewhere in the middle. collison, lawson, flynn, etc, would help us win now...... and hopefully get even better later.
I honestly like the idea floated out there of getting Hinrich. Now I know I've been critical of him in the past on the trade board, saying that we wouldn't give Ford straight up. But that was mainly to try and squeeze Chicago for something.
I think there's a good chance we could get Hinrich for Dunleavy, straight up. Hinrich plugs right into the PG spot, can play some SG next to Ford if need be, open up room for George immediately, is basically a 2-year guy. If he fits great, re-sign him, if not, by then we'd have a better option.
I just don't see an easier-to-acquire, as-good stop gap out there as Hinrihc.

We can't play Kaman w/ Roy and Kaman is no backup, we have no need for him.

Re: Win Now Point Guard
Hinrich is supposedly traded to Washington but the deal won't be final until the 8th and maybe we could turn it into a three way between now and then.

Hinrich is a great 3 gaurd. I like his defense, but his PG skills leave something to be desired. Not too mention his contract is ewwww stinky.
