there are really only two ways to use an expiring contract. 1) you can trade them for a player with a longer contract, or 2) you can let them expire and try to sign free agents with your cap space. I suppose it is theoretically possible to trade an expiring for an expiring but that would be a pure talent swap with no extra value received because the contracts were soon to expire.

personally, I prefer the second option. option one gets you a player some other team doesn't want to keep. option two gets you a player that the other team can't afford to pay as much as we can. option two also lets you make trades where you take a player without having to send matching dollars back. option two also gives you a low payroll during a possible lock out or strike.

bottom line, I can't see much of a reason to rush into a Murphy trade.

I'm a Mavs fan and will readily admit Barea for hansbrough seems far fetched and too sweet for the Mavs. Barea for McRoberts may be a more feaisble deal, not sure how Indy would feel about that though.
