Star says Rolle's contract is only partially guaranteed through today. without knowing how large the partial is, you really can't say the signing was a mistake if we wind up having to cut him. you'd expect to have to pay him something to get him to come to camp. I think the real question is where Rolle would go if you cut him. No, you can't send a player to the D-league who is not on your 15 man roster. so would another team pick him up? would he play in Europe for a year and then sign a contract with us another year or would you get in a bidding war with other teams? trading Rolle for a draft pick would also be an option. he was a very low pick so getting a pick with the potential to be higher might not be all that hard.

otherwise, trading partners may be down to the handful of teams with the cap room to absorb a Jones.

Rolle's contract is guaranteed for $50,000 through today, becoming fully guaranteed if he makes the opening day roster.

Any player can be "straight up released" at any time. It's just that players with guarantees would continue to be paid the remainder of their guarantee and will count against the cap/tax figure for as long as the guarantee lasts. It is really up to the team whether they want to do that or not.

RE: The D-League - There is a new rule that says the final three players cut by any team will be "allocated" to that team's D-League affiliate, provided the player is willing to sign the standard D-League contract. Theoretically, both Lance Allred and Magnum Rolle (if he is the final cut) could be allocated to Fort Wayne.

There are two basic problems with this. First, as far as I can tell, the Pacers would retain no rights to Magnum. They could re-sign him later, but he would be an unrestricted free agent available to sign with any team. The bigger potential problem is that the D-League pays almost nothing - between $12 and $24 thousand per year, and Magnum may be able to find more elsewhere - though that's an open question.

Didn't we trade THREE second round picks for James White, sign him to a GUARANTEED contract and still CUT him??

Larry seems to fall in love with second round potential!

True. That draft class should be forgotten, though.

What if Magnum played in Europe, similar to Stanko and Lorbek? How many years later and we still maintain their rights.

We need to stash him for a season, and bring him back after everyone expires. Maybe tell him if he does it, we'll guarantee him 3 yrs next season, with a club option for a fourth. It would essentially be a low end rookie-deal.

Since we've already signed Magnum to a contract, the only way we can keep his rights is to keep him on the roster. If we cut him, he's a free agent.

Your second paragraph would be a violation of the rules similar to the one with Joe Smith that cost Minny 5 first round draft picks. It wouldn't be as severe, but it is a circumvention of the cap.

Yeah, I figured it was collusion, but I am sure this low-level stuff happens all the time. Joe Smith was a former No.1 pick, and still had potential. He was under the microscope just a tad more than Rolle will be.

Thanks for clarifying.

The Pacers have released Magnum Rolle according to Mike Wells' twitter.

not too surprised, but still sorry to see him go. Management must not have been impressed w/ his preseason. still definitely has the potential to make a roster thouhg.

Bad decision S.Jones is a waste of a roster space. Watch San Antonie pick up Magnum and he becomes a stud.

This is so dumb. What is Solomon Jones going to do for us this season? Nothing. If anyone follows Rolle on Twitter is one of the most positive guys in the league I bet. He's always talking about how much he loves the Pacers and is determined to get better. We really are losing out on something here considering keeping Solomon Jones doesn't make us any better of a team. Neither of them would contribute this year. Jones is terrible and has no upside potential. At least Rolle has potential.

Stupid, stupid move.
